Summary
With the recent release ofOverwatch 2Season 11’s midseason patch, fans of Blizzard’s hero-shooter have a wealth of new content to explore. Despite the controversy surrounding the latest balance update, fans have expressed excitement over theTransformerscollaboration, the 2024 Summer Games Event, andthe addition of Mythic Weapons. Notably, amid all this activity, fans may not have gotten a chance to look at Team 4’s hints about the new hero.
Overwatch 2players can expect the arrival of a character currently code-named Space Ranger, the forthcoming support hero, in Season 12. Initially revealed at BlizzCon 2023, Space Ranger’s kit appears to focus on mobility and versatility. Unfortunately, since her initial reveal in November, Blizzard has kept further details relatively quiet. However, following the recent update, eagle-eyed fans have noticed several key details that appear to reveal Space Ranger’s true identity.
Season 11 of Overwatch 2 May Have Revealed Space Ranger’s Real Name
Space Ranger’s Rocket Ship Has Landed in Dorado
On July 9, Twitter user Proto_VI posted findings that Space Ranger’s rocket ship had landed on Earth. This followed reports that a blue comet could be seen streaking across the sky in all ofOverwatch 2’s US-based maps, except Midtown. Inthe attacker’s spawn of Dorado, players can see a crashed Lucheng Interstellar space shuttle situated in the middle of the courtyard. Adorned with the words “Project Red Promise” and tangled in wires, this new ship has captured significant attention within theOverwatch 2community.
Potentially of greater intrigue than the pod itself is the rocket ship’s interior, which houses a single photograph depicting two figures. The picture features a young woman of unknown identity on the left, clad in a laboratory coat. To her right stands none other thanMei, the ice-wielding DPS hero ofOverwatch 2and world-renowned climatologist. Additionally, faint beeping noises emanating from the spacecraft have piqued the curiosity of players. Twitter user Coathar44 claims to have deciphered the coded message as: “J has landed. Attempting transmission to RPT. Awaiting response…”
Overwatch 2’s Lore Has Alluded To Space Ranger Before
Interestingly, Mei mentions her friend Jiayi in a voice line on Lijiang Tower, suggesting Jiayi could be the mysterious “J.” Before the match starts, Mei states, “My friend Jiayi works here. She and I had a lot of fun in grad school. Maybe too much.” Although Jiayi remains relatively unknown, she is known to be an employee of Lucheng Interstellar. In lore, Lucheng Interstellar is a Chinese company involved in long-range space exploration andthe creator of Horizon Lunar Colony.
While there has been speculation suggesting that Dr. Chao, the CEO of Lucheng Interstellar, known for spending extensive time in low-gravity environments like the moon, could be Space Ranger, recent evidence suggests otherwise. Jiayi’s theorized age, presumed Chinese nationality, connection to Mei, and her involvement in the space industry closely align with what fans have deduced aboutSpace Ranger’s identity thus far. With confirmation from Blizzard that the upcoming support hero hails from a Mars colony, it appears that Jiayi has returned to Earth, possibly in search of Mei.
Considering that the photograph appears to depict Mei and “J” as being relatively young, it’s possible that this image was taken before Mei’s cryogenic suspension. As such, some postulate Space Ranger might be a descendant or friend of “J.”
