Summary
Pokemonfans aren’t happy about the restrictions on nicknaming their Pokemon in the games. A recent conversation highlights problems with the system and has fans urging developer Game Freak to change course in futurePokemontitles.
From the beginning of thePokemonseries, players who catch a new Pokemon are given the option to give the creature a nickname. While it isn’t mandatory, players sometimesgive their Pokemon nicknamesto help separate them from other catches of the same species, or even just for the fun of it. However, the way nicknaming in the game works is causing headaches for some fans, and has led to them wishing things would change.
Pokemonfan TheAzureAzazel shared their thoughts on Reddit, where many other players have since added their voices to the conversation. TheAzureAzazel points out that not being able to nicknameevent Pokemonis a huge inconvenience to them, and that it’s a frustrating limitation. With very limited exceptions, players are stuck with whatever nickname a Pokemon has when it’s given to them via an event. TheAzureAzazel says that even the ability to change the nickname just once would be great, but that’s not usually an option.
Pokemon Nickname Change Restrictions Frustrate Fans
Fellow players have agreed with TheAzureAzazel, and also pointed out that similar problems exist for traded Pokemon. If a Pokemon has a nickname when it’s traded, that name can’t be changed afterward. If a player knows the person they’re trading with personally, they may be able to ask them to change the nickname, either before trading the Pokemon or even by trading it back to do so. However, outside of those options, players are usually stuck with whatever nickname other trainers come up with.
There have been rare instances where players have been allowed to change the name of event Pokemon, but it’s not the standard. This has left some fans wondering why it was an option with select event Pokemon in past titles. For example, one fan pointed out that they were able to rename theirevent Shiny ZeraorafromPokemon Sword and Shield, but isn’t consistently something that’s allowed. Some fans were also interested in being able to revert a Pokemon back to its default species name, especially when faced with an offensive or weird nickname, but that’s not possible, either.
Game Freak regularly makestweaks to the systems inPokemongames, so it’s not out of the question that this could change at some point in the future. However, considering this has generally been a restriction since the Gen 1Pokemongames, fans shouldn’t count on it.
