Summary
MultiplePokemon GOplayers have been alerted to the start of a Tornadus raid hour at the worst possible time: during an actual real life tornado warning. Fans are subsequently sharing their amusement and concerns regardingPokemon GO.
Pokemon GORaidsare a big deal for many players and one of the best opportunities to get a powerful Pokemon. Raids are often thematic, butPokemon GOitself warns the player not to play during dangerous circumstances and to remain aware of their surroundings, which clashes with the timing of these alerts.
At least two fans have come forward with the funny - but potentially dangerous - moment thatPokemon GOsuggested they go hunt a Tornadus in the midst of severe weather.Pokemon GOfans xMarioFromOvOx and TheShmud both shared screenshots of their phones' alerts from July 31. Their phones prominently alerted the users that a tornado warning had gone into effect in the area. However, right beside it,Pokemon GOalerts the user to a Tornadus Raid Hour, and that the user should “tame this storm.”
Pokemon GO’s Tornado Timing
Needless to say, going outside to participate in a raid during a tornado warning would be an incredibly foolish and dangerous thing to do. Even if it were a remote raid, players probably had more important things to be doing to ensure their safety at that time. However, the simple fact thatPokemon GOwanted players to gocatch a Tornadusof all things when weather was severe enough for a genuine tornado to spawn has struck both of the users and commenters as being pretty funny. TheShmud joked that it was “a little too much” augmented reality, while another player called it immersive gaming. xMarioFromOvOx notes that they got a chuckle out of the moment while the intense weather stormed.
In its absolute prime,Pokemon GOfans did some crazy stuff to get rare Pokemon, with players dropping everything to chase after rare spawns at the time. However, risking life and limb for the game isn’t something anyone should aspire to. Some might argue that Niantic should have safeguards in place for these kinds of things, where any severe weather warnings or similar shelter-in-place alerts cancel any local spawns or raids that might otherwise encourage players to go outside when it’s dangerous. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first timePokemon GOhas recommended playing during a tornado warning. For now, it remains up to the player’s judgment.
Thankfully, impacted fans of the game still have some time left toparticipate in Tornadus raidsif they missed out on this one. Tornadus Incarnate raids will continue through August 3 at 10 am local time. With any luck, players' luck will hold out and the weather won’t become dangerous again during that time period.
