Summary
Studying the flora and fauna of the world ofPokemonis a lot like studying real-life biology. Over time, like animals, Pokemon evolve to suit their environment, except on a much shorter timespan, and a Pokemon’s environment is usually a sequence of battles that go on until one side is unconscious. Like real-life evolution, some Pokemon take on larger bodies and more dangerous traits. But just like humans, some Pokemon evolve to work in collectives, allowinggroups to succeed where one would fail. This tends to occur in the games once a Pokemon reaches a high enough level. Another explanation is that some or all of these Pokemon partially split like cells, resulting in a new life form double or triple the size of the old.
Either way, these Pokemon have never been grouped by an element or regarded as a special type, but there have been enough throughout the series that by now, there should be a Pokemon professor out there making this phenomenon their dedicated area of study. For this list, only Pokemon made of the same type of evolutionary line count. Combinations of one large and one small Pokemon, like Slowbro, or multi-headed Pokemon, like Dudrio, are disqualified. Collective Pokemon whose components are not counted as Pokemon, such as Combee or Falinks, won’t be counted either. Although Exegguter seems like a fit, its mysterious tree body seems to connect it to a different evolutionary process, and as such, it won’t be allowed to join this collection of collectives.
Magneton - The Multi-Magnet Pokemon
Made Up Of… A Magnemite Trinity
This trio of attractive magnets makes the most sense thematically. If a bunch of magnets is thrown together in real life, an electromagnetic force will hold them together. Magneton’s various Pokedex entries highlight Magneton’s intense magnetic field, a force powerful enough to disrupt sensitive electronics, dry up moisture in the air, and even invoke a thunderstorm.
A Magnmite may not be up to much alone, but with two friends, it can become one ofthe most powerful electric Pokemonin the wild. Although its creation is described as a cluster, a player’s Magnemite will evolve into a Magneton at level 30. A possible explanation might be that at this level, the pull of the Magnemite is so strong that two wild variants of the equivalent levels are drawn to it either instinctively or through magnetic resonance.
Metagross - The Merged Metalic Pokemon
Made Up Of… A Metang Pair / A Beldum Quartet
This hyper-intelligent robot Pokemon is a nested doll of smaller-Pokemon-making-one-big-Pokemon. In their earliest evolutionary forms, two Beldum combine together to evolve into Metang (how the eyeball-holding ball-and-sockets merge together isa mystery to the Poke-scientific community). In turn, two combined Metangs form Metagross, a being with four minds and an incredible capacity for calculations.
Beldum are well-suited to the merging of minds. In the wild and in enough numbers, they can act as a swarm, flying in the air and communicating with the hive via magnetism. The combined psychic abilities of a Metang make it a deadly enemy. However, as a quorum of four, Metagross becomes a formidable intellect easily capable of surpassing military supercomputers. That, combined with its deadly claws and impenetrable armor, makes it a near-impossible Pokemon to defeat.
Dugtrio - The Many-Moles Pokemon
Made Up Of… A Diglett Triad
Tunneling through earth and rock is hard work. That’s why it makes sense to work as a team. Legend says that Dugrio has one body and three Diglett heads, but nobody has ever been able to verify the theory since nobody has ever seen a Diglett or a Dugtrio in full above ground. It is entirely reasonable to believe that its body is made of earth. If true, a Dugtrio could be formed when two other Diglett bore into a third by accident.
According to Pokedex entries, the three heads of Dugtrio work together seamlessly to dig at high speeds and share a mental as well as an emotional connection. This bond allows them to coordinate their efforts effortlessly, enabling them to undertake fargrander terraforming projectsthan one little Diglett working alone.
Vanillux - The Twin Treat Pokemon
Made Up Of… A Vanillish Duo
To the uneducated trainer, Vanillish is one scoop of ice cream, while Vanillux is a luxurious bowl of two slightly melted-together scoops in a crystalline cone. To a Pokemon expert, this amateur assessment isn’t far off, as Vanillux does have a startling resemblance to the frosty treat. However, Vanillux isn’t just an enchanted frozen dessert, but the ice crystals it creates around itself with its breath certainly give it thatmagical “winter wonderland"aesthetic.
Beneath the layer of snow are two separate but linked beings. According to the most vetted Pokemon literature (Pokedex data input by an adventuring ten-year-old), Vanillux comes into being when two Vanillish come into contact during the day when their outer layers are prone to melting. If they are still together by nightfall, they will permanently merge to become one.
Weezing - The Plural Pollution Pokemon
Made Up Of… A Koffing Couplet
Weezing’s evolution seems straightforward: thanks to increased toxicity in the atmosphere, two bumbling Koffing will bump together to form a dual-chambered gas bag, doubling their toxic output. Weezing’s two heads are connected by two tubes and a faceless growth. What isn’t explained is where the Galarian variant of Weezing (which manifests from the combination of any two Koffing as long as they are in the region) gets its Victorian-style top hat-cum-chimney-stack.
Apparently, an encounter with a Koffing was common when Galar was undergoing an industrial revolution, presumably with the same frequency thatthose melancholic Victoriansof real-life Great Britain sighted the ghosts of dead chimneysweep children lingering in their drawing rooms during twilight hours. Unlike Victorian factory owners (or modern-day pollution-producing magnates), this variant of Weezing absorbs pollution and outputs clean air, making them a benefit to society and actually worth potentially keeping around.
Wugtrio - The Triple Tunneller Pokemon
Made Up Of… A Wiglett Trifecta
The astute Poke-observer may well note that Wugtrio bears a striking resemblance to another trio of rooted Pokemon: Dugtrio. However, the two do not share an evolutionary line; it is theorized that the two coincidentally developed similar characteristics asthe result of environmental adaptationthrough digging. Whereas Diglett strikes hard against rock and stone, the amphibious Wiglett is content to make its home in soft sand, either above or below the waves of a beach.
Poke-experts assume that its evolution is the result of a mutually beneficial living arrangement. A Wugtrio makes its home in a large rock, the kind that reveals itself when the tides occasionally sift its top layer of sand away. Unlike the sole Wiglett, the red, triple-headed Wugtrio is fierce and violent. It has been observed to choke the life out of any prey foolish enough to approach its sanctuary, making any investigation into its complete anatomy a highly hazardous and inadvisable pursuit.
