Fate/Extrais a dungeon-crawling RPG that’s part of theever-expandingFateseries. Developed by Type-Moon and Imageepoch, the game takes place in a parallel universe to that of theFate/Stay Nightvisual novel. It was originally published by Marvelous Entertainment in July 2010 as a Japan-only release. In 2020, Bandai Namco announced that Type-Moon Studio BB is working on a remake of the game titledFate/Extra Record.

Fate/Extra Record Gets Release Window and First Trailer

Four years later, the Japanese publisher finally showcased the game with a reveal trailer, which was shared at FGO Fest 2024 on August 4. The two-minute video goes over someFate/Extra Record’s story beats and even offers a few glimpses of its gameplay, such as combat and exploration sections. The promotional clip ends by revealing 2025 as the game’s release window. As things stand right now,Fate/Extra Recordwill be aJapan exclusiveat launch. But a Western release may also be on the cards, not least because Type-Moon often publishes its Japan-only games itself, but has decided to partner with Bandai Namco forFate/Extra Record.

The 2010 game was met with fairly positive reviews at launch, with many critics praising it for its mixture of dungeon-crawling and visual novel-style storytelling focusing on everyday school life. While that combination might sound reminiscent of the 3DPersonagames, the similarities are more conceptual than mechanical; not only doesFate/Extrahave significantly different combat that revolves around predicting enemy moves rather than exploiting weaknesses to get extra actions, but it also lacks the Social Link system from contemporaryPersonagames.

SinceFate/Extrais still commonly touted as one of thebest PSP-exclusive RPGsto this day, the arrival of its remake could be seen as a big deal by many fans of the genre. While its international release is still up in the air, Bandai Namco has at least confirmedFate/Extra Record’s target platforms: the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.

Fate/Extra’s 2010 PSP debut was followed by the 2013 release ofFate/Extra CCC. Type-Moon described that title as a “companion game” rather than a direct sequel.Fate/Extra CCCnever made its way outside of Japan. IfFate/Extra Recordwere to sell well enough, Type-Moon might also consider remakingCCC.
