Summary
TheRed Dead Redemptionfranchise has continued its tradition of featuring a new protagonist in each game. WIth each protagonist that is introduced, a fresh and compelling perspective is given, which is one of the many features that keepRed Dead Redemptionso intriguing. Each story in the series offers a unique look into the American West, and a third game needs to continue this trend.
Although what is considered the Wild West era of America only lasted around three decades, it’s one of the mostmonumental time periods in American history. It was a time of outlaws and building the fabric of the country, but there are also many stories that don’t get told nearly as much as the story of the cowboy and the settler. IfRed Dead Redemptionreally wants to showcase the many sides to life in this era, the next chapter should star a Native American protagonist.
Red Redemption 3 Starring a Native American Protagonist Would Tell a Different Story
The stories ofArthur Morgan and John Marstonboth beautifully illustrate the nuances and gray areas of trying to survive in a lawless world, butRed Dead Redemption 3needs to forego this same narrative. Arthur and John may have different personalities, but they come from fairly similar backgrounds and experiences.
Featuring an All-New Character Not Tied to Dutch van der Linde
IfRed Dead Redemption 3were to feature a brand-new protagonist, it could be the chance to introduce a never-before-seen character. Whether they have partial Native American ancestry or are actively a member of a tribe, this lead would be a compelling new viewpoint to bring into the spotlight.Red Dead Revolver’s protagonist, Red Harlow, was half Native American. This time around, Rockstar could approach a Native American character with far more nuance that highlights important differences in view of the American West.
Arthur and John are both well-written and complex characters, buta perspective outside of Dutch van der Linde’s gangmay be just what the series needs. A Native American protagonist could potentially feature the opposite experience of what Dutch’s posse is able to demonstrate to players. Dutch saw the Old West as a land of opportunity, while the Natives continuously faced settlers encroaching and killing them for their territory.
TheRed Dead Redemptionfranchise has consistently shown Native American tribes in some capacity, but it has only scratched the surface.
The Potential Return of Charles Smith
There is also the chance tobring back Charles Smith. Charles was born to an African American father and a Native American mother. Out of all the members of the van der Linde gang, Charles was one of the most honorable members. Besides Sadie Adler, Charles was the only one in Dutch’s posse to escape a disastrous fate. He eventually parts ways with the gang and heads to Canada, never to be seen again.A new chapter inRed Dead Redemptioncould dive into Charles' fate on his journey to Canada or expand upon his backstory before he joins Dutch and his pursuits.
Although featuring Charles asRed Dead Redemption 3’s protagonistwould still loosely connect the story to Dutch van der Linde’s gang, the character is too compelling to ignore. His brief membership in the gang doesn’t mean it has to focus on Dutch. Charles has plenty of history before he met Dutch, and his journey north is definitely free from the charismatic outlaw. As of now, there is no telling who a possibleRed Dead Redemption 3star will be. From Sadie Adler to Charles Smith, or even someone never-before-seen, there are some fascinating possibilities. What remains most important is that the protagonist should offer a new point of view.
