Summary

Devil Fruits inOne Piecetend to filter into one of three categories. There are Zoan fruits, which transform the user into animals, or in rare cases, mythical beings. There are Logia fruits, which allow the user to control a designated element. Finally, there are Paramecia fruits, which allow the user to do pretty much anything else. A user can gain one of these powers by eating a Devil Fruit, in exchange for losing their ability to swim.

Most Devil Fruits slide neatly into one of these three categories. However, the varied nature of Devil Fruits as a whole allows for a bit more variety than one may originally have accounted for. Whether by the nature of the fruit itself, or specific techniques the user implements, here are someDevil Fruits that manage to categorically defy the established three rulesets.

One Piece Big Mom riding on angry Zeus with Prometheus hair

5Soru Soru no Mi

User: Charlotte Linlin

As a former Emperor, it’s only right thatCharlotte Linlinshould have a powerful Devil Fruit. HerSoru Soru no Mi,allows her to play with the very lifespans of anyone who is afraid of her. Due to her large, nearly-indestructible body and insatiable appetite dating back to her childhood, Linlin has always inspired fear in those around her. It has been heavily implied she gained her power by eating the Devil Fruit’s previous owner, a disguised human trafficker who intended to sell her to the Marines.

While her soul-controlling Devil Fruit sits in Paramecia territory, the abilities it has can sometimes sit closer to Logia. Most notably, Linlin can transfer the souls of others, as well as her own, into non-living materials. These soul-infused objects become homies, with the ones made from Linlin’s own soul being the most powerful. Some of Linlin’s homies, such as Prometheus, a sun homie, and Hera, a thundercloud homie, allow Linlin limited control over the elements of fire and electricity. However, due to their semi-sentient nature, these homies are much less direct in how they allow the user to control said elements. Nami notably stole away Zeus, a thundercloud homie previously owned by Linlin.

Gasparde, split, with candy syrup leaking out

4Ame Ame no Mi

User: Gasparde

As a non-canon Devil Fruit, the unique nature ofGasparde’s Ame Ame no Miis somewhat understandable. A candy-centric Devil Fruit debuting well before Whole Cake Island is an oddity in and of itself, but that is only one factor in the strangeness of it. This Devil Fruit is a Logia, which are commonly derived from either elements or naturally occurring substances. However, the “element” Gasparde has control over is candy syrup. This itself is somewhat odd, but other Logia powers, such as darkness or soot, are not strictly natural elements either.

Gasparde’s Devil Fruit also has the distinction of allowing him to control the element in both solid and semi-liquefied forms. The syrup is like Devil Fruits, also noted for tasting poor. This is a trait found in other food-generating Devil Fruits, such as the Kuki Kuki no Mi. In addition to standard weaknesses, this Devil Fruit possesses a weakness to flour.Incidentally, Charlotte Katakuri, was originally supposed to have a Logia fruit, the Kona Kona no Mi, which would allow him to control and transform into flour. Some have speculated his position as Minister of Flour is either a reference or a remnant of this concept.

Tamago Introducing Himself To The Straw Hats In One Piece

3Tama Tama no Mi

User: Baron Tamago

TheTama Tama no Miallows its user’s body to have the composition of an egg. It was eaten byTamago,a member of the Big Mom Pirates. This type of ability would typically be categorized as Paramecia, as eggs themselves are not animals or elements. However, this case is an exception. Once Tamago’s egg-like body is cracked, he becomes the chick-like Viscount Hiyoko. Once Hiyoko is badly damaged, he turns into Count Niwatori, a rooster-man and this fruit’s most powerful form. Hiyoko reverts into Tamago upon being brutally injured.

The more animal-centered elements at play allow this fruit to slide more neatly into Zoan territory. Even so, aspects of Tamago’s Zoan seem unclear, such as if he can ever revert to a non-Zoan form, as his egg form appears to functionally be his default appearance.

Karasu Susu Susu no Mi logia type one piece

2Susu Susu no Mi

User: Karasu

Karasuhas actually been a continual presence post-timeskip, making intermittent appearances for over a decade, despite appearing in the flesh much more recently. This is due to the murder of crows he derives from his Devil Fruit, which aidedthe Revolutionary Armyin various capacities. These crows have a lot of utility, used to deliver both messages and people, as well as steal weapons from enemies, among other abilities. They were later confirmed to be a Devil Fruit ability of Karasu’s, but it became somewhat unclear, for a time, what his Devil Fruit actually was.

Many suspected it to be a Zoan type, due to it consisting of what appeared to be animals. However, this also raises some questions, as the typical Zoan only turns its user into one animal rather than a group of them. Ultimately, it was confirmed to be a Logia, known as theSusu Susu no Mi, which transforms its user into soot. These crows Karasu makes use of are actually derived from the impure carbon substance. While this clears up certain discrepancies, the confusion was understandable, as these crows were seen and not elaborated on for quite some time.

Luffy in Gear 5, a form that turns his ensemble white

1Gomu Gomu no Mi

User: Monkey D. Luffy

Even the more confusing Devil Fruits are often still able to slot themselves neatly into one category, or two at most. The true nature of theGomu Gomu no Miwas intentionally obfuscated for several years. It was classified as a mere Paramecia, the most common category of Devil Fruit. Nonetheless, it was stolen from the World Government by the Red Hair Pirates, and inadvertently eaten byMonkey D. Luffy. This fruit turned Luffy into a rubber human, granting him a stretchy physique. With Luffy’s intense training, even in a dormant state, this Devil Fruit made him an incredibly powerful fighter.

However, once awakened, the truth behind this Devil Fruit was revealed. The Gomu Gomu no Mi was, in fact, theHito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. This “Paramecia” was actually a Mythical Zoan, the rarest variant of Devil Fruit, which allowed its user to transform into the Sun God, Nika, and gain his immense power. Regardless of its true nature, the fruit still seems a perfect fit for its heroic and ever-optimistic user.
