Summary

According to sources,Nvidiamay release an updated version of the GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card that includes GDDR6 video memory rather than the current GDDR6X chips. The potential move byNvidiato GDDR6 video memory from the faster GDDR6X VRAM results from a shortage of the latter chips due to quality check failures and supply cuts.

Originally released in April 2023, the GeForce RTX 4070 runs on Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace architecture, with 12GB of GDDR6X video memory andcompatibility with ray tracingand DLSS technologies. The RTX 4070 is targeted at PC builders looking to play games at either 1080p or 1440p resolutions, as it can struggle with 4K gaming without some graphical adjustments. At the time of writing, the cheapest version of the RTX 4070, the MSI Ventus 2X OC, was marked at $539 on Amazon and Newegg.

Though all rumors must be taken with a grain of salt, a source claimed that Nvidia may release an updated RTX 4070 GPU out of necessity.According to Wccftech, Nvidia may swap out the GDDR6X video memory of the RTX 4070 for the older GDDR6 architecture in the future due to a failure in quality among some of the unreleased chips. Between that and some supply cuts to the current lineup of RTX graphics cards, Nvidia’s potential swap may be necessary to keep up with the demands of consumers, despitethe pending release of the RTX 50 series. However, Nvidia has not officially stated any pricing or release date information about the GDDR6 version of the RTX 4070.

Sources Claim A New RTX 4070 With GDDR6 VRAM Is Imminent

In addition to the rumored memory swap, Twitter user MEGAsizeGPU pointed out that the updated RTX 4070 may have a clock speed of 20 Gbps, which is 1 Gbps slower than the current models on GDDR6X memory. Ergo, the change to GDDR6 could result in a small but noticeable drop in gaming performance. MEGAsizeGPU stated that other specifications of the RTX 4070, such as 12GB video memory and a 200W power draw, would remain the same. While the clock speeds may be lower at stock value, GDDR6 memory can be overclocked to make up for the change, adding value to one ofthe best graphics card series on the market.

With a price point that has stayed near $550 following the launch of the RTX 40 Super Series GPUs,the RTX 4070 became a compelling choice for mid-range PC builds. Whether the GDDR6 version of the RTX 4070 hits the market at a lower price point remains to be seen.
