Summary

Some recent information suggests that the extensively rumoredPS5 Promay offer a near 200% jump in SSD storage space compared to the standard PS5. Previous leaks alleged a significant performance uplift on thePS5 Pro, but if this latest information is true, the upgraded mid-generation console will afford users a lot more internal storage to download and play their favorite games.

The tremendously shorter load times made possible by the PS5’s vaunted high-speed SSD have impressed many players, but the 825GB storage capacity on the pre-Slim versions of the console spelled trouble for usable space. After deducting the space required by the operating system, the standardPS5 only has 667GB of usable SSD space. This was somewhat rectified by the PS5 Slim’s bigger 1TB SSD, which offered around 840GB of usable storage space. PS5 owners also have the option to further expand their console’s storage up to 8TB using a compatible off-the-shelf Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD.

However, recent reports indicate that theheavily leaked PS5 Promight double the SSD storage space of the PS5 Slim. In the latest episode of the Broken Silicon podcast, industry insider Moore’s Law is Dead claimed to have seen a PS5 Pro development kit, stating that the hardware sported a2TB SSD. It’s worth noting, though, that this doesn’t necessarily imply a 2TB SSD for the retail version of the PS5 Pro. More often than not, console devkits are equipped with beefier hardware as they’re built to fulfill the needs of game developers, which may not always align with retail hardware specs.

PS5 Pro Devkit Reportedly Has a 2TB SSD, But Retail Versions May Be Different

Case in point, a now-removedYouTube video showing a standard PS5 devkitrevealed a staggering 2.5TB of SSD space on the machine, which evidently didn’t translate to the retail variants of the PS5. Thus, it remains to be seen whether Moore’s Law is Dead’s report holds true for the retail PS5 Pro’s SSD space. The insider also alleged that the PS5 Pro will use the same power connector as the current PS5, suggesting an identical power draw between both systems. This supposedly makes for cooler temperatures and quiet operation for the PS5 Pro.

With rumors surrounding the PS5 Pro cropping up on a very regular basis, one can only wonder how long Sony plans to refrain from revealing the console. At the moment, the likeliest targets for a PS5 Pro announcement are Tokyo Game Show 2024, where Sony will be present as a general exhibitor, and therumored September 2024 State of Play, which might be held at the end of the month. Whichever it may be, PlayStation fans likely won’t have to wait too long until the PS5 Pro is finally revealed.
