Summary

Scream 7is returning to its roots, with plans in place to focus on the legacy of the franchise. Neve Campbell’sSidney Prescott is set to be the main characteronce again, after playing a supporting role inScream (2022)and not featuring at all inScream 6.It is hoped that the return of the classic elements of a Scream movie will also lead to a truly shocking Ghostface reveal inScream 7.

It’s not that the Ghostface killers in the recent sequels haven’t been great, but it wasn’t exactly a surprise that Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman were the killers inScream (2022), followed by a similar lack of surprise at Detective Bailey and Ethan Landry being two of the masked maniacs inScream 6, with Quinn Bailey’s Ghostface reveal only surprising because she had a fake out death early on.Theclassic whodunit elementneeds to make a return inScream 7, with killers that genuinely surprise the audience, like the earlier Scream sequels achieved.

Scream 7’s Ghostface Killers Need To Shock The Audience To Its Core

One of the best parts of a Scream movie is the unmasking of the Ghostface killer in the finale. The Scream franchise works because, as well as being slasher movies, they are also classic whodunit murder mysteries. However,it’s become too easy to guess the killers as the series has progressed, and the whodunit has become more of a ‘whydunit’, with the killer’s motive the only real surprising revelation, and not the Ghostface killers themselves.

The increase in fan favorite legacy characters surviving each movie, coupled with the increase ofGhostface’s body count, has led to the choice of potential suspects becoming less and less in the more recent sequels, making it really obvious who the killers are through a simple process of elimination.Scream 7will have to introduce a bunch of new and intriguing characters into the mix, to keep the audience guessing who the killer is,and who the next victim will be.

A truly shocking outcome would be to have one or both ofSidney’s kids be revealed as Ghostface. To have Sidney’s offspring assume the identity of the killer who has haunted her for all these years would be chilling. If Sidney essentially created a monster, it would possibly be one of the best Ghostface killer reveals the franchise has ever had.

In terms of shock factor, the next most shocking Ghostface reveal would be alegacy character as the killerinScream 7. Sidney Prescott should not beScream 7’s Ghostface killer, as much as this would be the most shocking Ghostface reveal of all time, it would also undo everything the character stands for. However,Gale Weathers beingScream 7’s Ghostface is not totally out of the question, and it would definitely be one of the most shocking reveals of all time. But, in reality, Gale’s no killer, and she’ll probably be side by side with Sidney when it comes to fighting against Ghostface inScream 7.

The best option forScream 7would probably be to go with theCult of Ghostface killersthat have been rumored to feature for some time now. However, ifKevin Williamson’s plansare to go with this option, there has to be a significantly large cast of characters inScream 7, so the whodunit element doesn’t become obsolete, as this would ruin the Ghostface killer shock. If Stu Macher was to be alive and revealed as thefranchise mastermind, it would still be a shocking Ghostface reveal, despite thefan movement wanting Stu’s return inScream 7for some time now.

Jill Roberts' Ghostface In Scream 4 Was The Last Shocking Reveal In The Scream Franchise

The last time a Ghostface killer reveal really shocked the audience was arguably inScream 4, when Sidney’s cousin, Jill Roberts, turned out to be the masked murderer, alongside Charlie Walker. Jill was billed as the potentialnew final girl for Sidney to mentorinScream 4, but the audiences' expectations were toyed with, and the utter shock was palpable when Jill took off the Ghostface mask to reveal herself to Sidney in the final act.

It wasn’t the first time one of Sidney’s relatives was revealed to be the Ghostface killer, with Jill joining her cousin,Roman Bridger, in the Ghostface killer club, after he embarked on a solo spree inScream 3.Roman killed the cast ofStab 3: Return To Woodsboroon his way to enticing Sidney out of hiding to come face to face with him at John Milton’s Hollywood mansion on his 30th birthday. It was a shock that Roman Bridger turned out to be Sidney’s half brother, who had encouraged Billy and Stu to kill their mother,Maureen Prescott, butnothing could compete with Jill’s Ghostface admission inScream 4.Fans will have to wait and see ifScream 7can produce a Ghostface killer reveal to rival some of the best ones in the franchise.
