Summary

Scream 7has recovered after a series of controversies in the lead up to production getting underway in December 2024.The firing of Melissa Barrera has led to many fans claiming they will boycott the upcoming sequel,in solidarity with the actress who portrayed Sam Carpenter inScream 2022andScream 6. However, manylong term fans are quite happy withScream 7’s planned focus on the legacy of the franchisewith the return of Neve Campbell, and Kevin Williamson’s hiring as director.

Scream 7must cater to both legacy and more recent fans of the franchise, if the sixth sequel is to be a success. As it stands, only Campbell has signed on forScream 7, with legacy stars, Courteney Cox andPatrick Dempseyrumored to return as well. However, none of the cast fromScream 6(other than Cox) are expected to return. But this doesn’t mean thatScream 7can’t find ways to please both sets of fans.

Scream 5 Melissa Barrera As Sam

What did the fans have to say about Scream 7 after Melissa Barrera was fired?

AfterMelissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega’s exits, the future ofScream 7was propelled into serious doubt. But Guy Busick rewrote the script, and the return of Neve Campbell as the iconic final girl, Sidney Prescott, was announced alongside the original creator of the franchise, Kevin Williamson, at the helm. This made sureScream 7was well and truly back in business. However, this announcement wasn’t met with positivity by all fans, with calls to boycott the movie due to the treatment of Melissa Barrera.

In adiscussion on Reddit, fans discussed their stance onScream 7after Barrera was dropped from the project, and a lot of the fans were strongly in favor of boycotting the upcoming sequel. ImaGoGetta125 wrote:

In solidarity with Melissa, I won’t be watching 7. Especially if the Carpenter sisters aren’t going to be the main ones in it.

JUSTICEFORMELISSABARRERA

Another Redditor known as damion2600 agreed with this stance:

smh, they’ve built the entire reboot around her too. i don’t think she should’ve been dropped. damn shame.

However, in contrast to this opinion, many other fans are happy forScream 7to return to its roots, even if they don’t necessarily agree with the treatment of Melissa Barrera by Spyglass Media. In adifferent discussion on Reddit, a fan known as Sidneysnewhusband commented:

I’m just happy to see a Scream movie with Neve and KW so heavily involved. I’ve been waiting for this since Scream 4.

I love 5 and VI but did any of us ever ask for the requel thing to begin with? I understand the outrage towards Spyglass, but I’m just too excited for a minute to live in this alternate universe I never thought would happen where Sidney is potentially a main character again. Hope the writers do her justice and refresh the character’s story somehow, and I wish more than ever that Dewey hadn’t been knocked off.

According to rumors,Scream 7could ignoreScream (2022)andScream 6, despite both movies still acting as canon in the upcoming sequel.Scream 7will likely be a full-on legacy sequel, which will delight fans ofthe 1996 originaland the three sequels that followed it. However, this is not such good news for fans ofScream 2022andScream 6, who were eagerly anticipating the completion ofThe Core Four’s storyline.

Scream 7could potentially appease these fans with inventive kills and a strong Ghostface motive, alongside a series of subtle nods to the last two movies.Scream 7’s filming schedule was recently put back from September to December 2024, and this could give the creative team more time to make sure Sam and Tara’s story is at least referenced, albeit not fully focused on inScream 7.

Another way to entice the fans who intend to boycottScream 7would be to release an intriguing trailerthat features some of the quintessential elements that make a Scream movie great, aside from whom the main characters are. A tease of an epic chase sequence would please all Scream fans, new and old, andmore of a focus on Ghostfacewould be something that could appeal to everyone.

Also,ifScream 7can genuinely create something brand new that doesn’t rely too heavily on either Scream 1-4 orScream (2022)andScream 6, it could cater to both the legacy and more recent fansof the franchise. Fans who are threatening to boycottScream 7over Barrera’s firing would be better off moving past it, and embracing the return of the ultimate final girl, Neve Campbell. IfScream 7isn’t a success, this will decrease the chances of Sam Carpenter and the rest of the Core Four possibly returning in a future Scream movie.
