Summary

Marvel fans have been waiting for the sequel of the hitShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsfor three years already. However, one of theShang-Chi 2stars seemingly hinted that there was no progress yet.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, starring Simu Liu, was released in September 2021 as part of MCU’s Phase Four. It was successful, grossing over $432 million worldwide, making it the ninth-highest-grossing film that year. Due to the positive reception, it earned a sequel. However, there has yet to be any definite news aboutShang-Chi 2. One fan even claimed on Thread that she felt Marvel abandonedShang-Chi’sfan base because there was allegedly no effort to film the sequel and feature the character in other Marvel movies. Liu assured the fan in his response that the sequel was happening bycommenting, “I proooomiss it’s happening.” However, one of his co-stars just gave a disappointing update about the sequel.

In the film, Awkwafina plays Katy, a hotel valet and Shang-Chi’s best friend in San Francisco. She isn’t aware of Shang-Chi’s past. She recently spoke withComicBookto promote her new filmJackpot. At the junket, she was asked about theShang-Chisequel. “I have not,” Awkwafina said when asked if she heard any update aboutShang-Chi 2. “I haven’t, but [those were] exciting announcements at Comic-Con.” Awkwafina could be referring to the surprising announcements made at the event. TheAvengers: The Kang Dynastywasofficially renamedAvengers: The Doomsday. Marvel also reintroduced Robert Downey Jr., this time not as the beloved Iron Man but as supervillain Doctor Doom. Unfortunately, there’s no official update about the anticipatedShang-Chisequel. The film is also not mentioned in the 2025 releases.

However, Liu gave a promising update about the movie when he appeared onThe Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallonin May. Jimmy Fallon said he loved the first movie and that it was a “crusher success.” The host said they were ready for part two but had not heard anything about it. Liu admitted that he was often asked about the project and assured the TV host and the rest of the fans who wanted to hear the update that it would definitely happen. TheBarbiestar said, “I will say this – It’s definitely happening, I should probably lead with that.” He acknowledged the praise they received for the first movie and said he was “deeply appreciative” of them. He also guarantees that the sequel is happening and they are excited to start filming.

Liu said:

So please know that if you’ve ever sent me a message, if you’ve ever asked about a sequel or just approached or any which way, I really take it to heart, and I really, really appreciate it, I do. I think I speak for myself and Destin [Daniel Cretton], our returning director, when I say that we’re so beyond excited to jump back in. We really are.

The sequel has been in the works since December 2021. Destin Daniel Cretton was attached to write and direct the film. He was previously set to directAvengers 5, akaAvengers: The Kang Dynasty, but left the project in November 2023, just weeks before its lead star, Jonathan Majors, was fired by Marvel after he was foundguilty on charges of reckless assault and harassment. Cretton’s departure from the project is reportedly amicable as he remains part of the Marvel Studios family. With Cretton not working onAvengers 5, he has more time to work onShang-Chi 2. One insider claimed thatShang-Chi 2would start filming in 2025. However, fans should take the report with a grain of salt and wait for Marvel’s confirmation. There is no doubt that the sequel is long overdue, but one thing is certain – it is still happening.
