As theMCUcontinues to grow and evolve, and events start converging towards the inevitable release of Avengers: Secret Wars, the connections upcoming projects will have towards those end goals have become more important than ever before to the fabric of theMCUas a whole. One such project isAgatha All Along, the upcoming Disney+ show that explores Agatha Harkness in the aftermath of her conflict withWanda Maximoff in the show Wandavision. As she and her unlikely coven of witches seek out the power to reclaim her own abilities as a centuries-old witch, the direction Agatha will take in theMCUas a whole is up in the air, with her comic book history showing her both in an antagonistic and heroic light. One thing that would be interesting to see is the formation of theMCUversion of the Daughters of Liberty.
A fairly new concept introduced in the pages ofCaptain Americacomics, the Daughters of Liberty covertly fought to preserve freedom and the new knowledge gained in America. Many heroes of the Marvel Universe are members of the group, but one of the founders of the covert organization dating back to the days of the American colonies was none other than Agatha Harkness, training women who joined in the ways of the mystic arts. If theMCUis to take Agatha on a journey of redemption and make her an ally to the magical heroes of the films, she should introduce the Daughters of Liberty in the face of the coming conflict in theMCUin theupcoming seriesAgatha All Along.
The Daughters of Liberty, EXPLAINED
Originally conceived as the Daughters of Light in 18th century Europe, the Daughters of Liberty were the American version of the group, dedicated to bringing freedom to all and preserving the knowledge gained through the new ages as they appeared. Led by the mysterious figure known as The Dryad, the roster of women has changed over time as the years passed by, with the likes of Harriet Tubman and her fight to free slaves during the 19th century being one such member.Agatha Harkness helped train the womenwho joined the organization in the use and practices surrounding magic.
The Daughters of Liberty became known to Captain America after he was framed for the death of General Ross, and he turned himself in voluntarily to prove himself innocent. Sharon Carter, along with recruits Misty Knight, Bobbi Morse, and Ava Ayala (White Tiger), all discovered the true culprit was none other than The Foreigner, the villainous ex-husband of White Sable. Other members like Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) andSue Storm of the Fantastic Four(Invisible Woman) worked together to help stage a breakout of Steve from prison, while the group’s leader helped stop the Foreigner, but not before Neo-Hydra launched an attack on them both, taking the Foreigner’s life.
Soon the group joined forces with Captain America, facing threats like conflicts at the US/Mexico border and protecting innocent immigrants there, as well as quelling riots and facing a new version of the villain Scourge. The Dryad was revealed to be Peggy Carter, while Agatha showed Steve using magic the group’s whole history. They discovered General Ross was alive, having used a Life-Model-Decoy to survive his assassination attempt.Shuri was brought inwhen it was discovered Sharon’s soul was connected to the villain Selene, and she worked with Agatha to free Sharon’s soul. Eventually, the group was made public, and began working together in the light.
The Daughters of Liberty in the MCU
So far in theMCU, Agatha has had a villainous, dark turn. Taking advantage of Wanda’s pain from the loss of Vision and the small town that Wanda took over, she attempts to harness the power of the Scarlet Witch using the Darkhold and gain unlimited power, only to be stopped by Wanda and stripped of her power and identity. As the trailer forAgatha All Alongshowed, the story for the upcoming show will feature Agatha not only regaining her memories, but taking a group of witches on an adventure down the Witches Road, a dimension outside normal space and time built for magical users.Whatever dangers and experiences Agatha hasalong the way, the question remains what kind of person Agatha will be by the show’s end.
If a hero emerges, or at least a person with a strong sense of morality, a magical user of Agatha’s strength and experience should help form the Daughters of Liberty. Not only do many of the modern-day members of the group exist in theMCUtoday, but having a clandestine, powerful group of women from both scientific, espionage, and magical backgrounds fighting to preserve knowledge and freedom is a strong message and direction for theMCUto take.WithCaptain America: Brave New Worldon the horizonand a change in the hero’s landscape emerging with multiversal threats standing by, the MCU could stand to have the Daughters of Liberty championing their cause inAgatha All Along, with Agatha as their architect.
