Summary
TheSilent Hill 2remake which is set to release later this year holds the potential to reignite interest in the franchise and elevate its relevance in modern gaming, even though longtime fans have expressed skepticism about its changes in direction. The apparent shift towards a greater focus on combat has been met with some backlash, but the other side of the survival horror genre could serve as a counterbalance which maintainsSilent Hill 2’s original charm.
While it’s been a franchise known for terrifying creatures and some of the creepiest environments found within the entire medium,Silent Hillhas always featured puzzleswhich must also be overcome to progress through esoteric levels. These puzzles have historically been modular, with their hints or even solutions varying depending on the chosen difficulty setting. It would make sense for theSH2remake to lean more heavily into these variations, but it might also be best for the upcoming title to utilize wholly original puzzles instead.
Combat Isn’t the Only Aspect of Silent Hill 2 Remake That is Seeing Changes
New Puzzles Have the Potential to Challenge Even Returning Players
WhileSilent Hill 2’s actionhas clearly received a substantial overhaul, theSH2remake has also been shown to have some fresh takes on its puzzles. Many fans of the series have already become intimately familiar with the puzzle challenges ofSH2, even under the harder conditions of its higher difficulties. Through making changes to these more nuanced sections of the title, Bloober Team might be able to capture a faithful gameplay loop even if combat is radically different.
Coupled with the traditional presence of varying difficulty levels that affect puzzles, a broad spectrum of challenging trials could be introduced outside ofmonster encounters in theSilent Hill 2remake. It may seem just as risky to make alterations to even the puzzles of such a beloved title, but there are some caveats to this which give the developer far more space for creativity and innovation.
Bloober Team Getting Puzzles Right Could Be One of Silent Hill 2 Remake’s Biggest Triumphs
An Area of the Game Where Remaining Faithful Could Hurt
There’s an inherent atmospheric and lore value to the puzzles andsolutions of the originalSilent Hill 2, but keeping all of these sequences unchanged would hardly maintain the same effect. Not only will returning players be able to easily solve most of them if Bloober keeps the same designs, but the frustrating nature of several puzzles would become more obvious in the modern context. While examples like “Free the Innocent Man” can translate well into the remake, only requiring the crimes of the hanged men to be swapped around or changed, the likes of the “Rotating Cube” being straight up randomized on higher difficulty might have room for improvement.
Striking a Balance of Homage to the Original Silent Hill 2
There’s probably more flexibility in handling puzzles than any other system in the remake, but that doesn’t mean they should be completely altered. Several have deeper meanings which echo the overall themes of the title and are better off preserved. This will need to be executed carefully. Instances like the coin puzzle can be trivialized by memorization and could easily be switched around, but the storytelling that goes into its hints would need to be crafted with just as much intention. Since the mixed reception to combat could be remedied through the implementation of compelling puzzles which honor the original, the title set to kick offSilent Hill’s renaissancecan’t afford more backlash to the changes it makes to one of its core forms of gameplay.
