Summary

Of the many great things being said in reviews aboutSteamWorld Heist 2right now, the class and skill system has to be one of the best. Heroes can change classes if they swap weapons with each other. For example, Daisy is a Sniper, and Snipers mostly use rifles. If she equips a shotgun, Daisy will become a Flanker.

Leveling up a class will unlock skills and players can equip skills across an unlockedskill tree which is typical for an RPG. Resources are limited, so players have to play their cards right inSteamWorld Heist 2. So, of the many options available, here are the skills most heroes should unlock in the game.

Free Sidearm skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

8Free Sidearm

Use Sidearms As A Free Turn

Free Sidearm is a Brawler-based skill which is odd considering this class is all about melee. Sidearm is a type of Utility Item that party members can equip. Most Utility Items, like a Sidearm which is a gun, cost Action Points to use.

Free Sidearm is a passive ability for Brawlers that allows them to use a Sidearm free of charge once per turn. Even for Brawlers, ranged weapons can come in handy like if a barrel is just begging to be exploded around a large swathe of enemies.

Guts skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

7Guts

Remain Active Even After Death

Guts is another skill for Brawlers but this one thematically makes more sense as they are tough individuals. It allows characters to withstand a deadly blow so long as they die above one HP. For example, if an enemy deals three damage to someone with two HP, they will be revived for one HP.

That’s probably more math than any tactical fan can handle, but the point is Guts can revive a hero on the spot during a mission. It’s similar to how auto-life spells work in theFinal Fantasygames.

Hard Shell skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

6Hard Shell

Brace Yourself Before Impact

Hard Shell is the final skill worth mentioning for the Brawler class. The overall lesson here is for players to buy a hammer as soon as possible to unlock the Brawlers. Hammers aside, Hard Shell will brace characters once per turn and right before they get hit.

It will grant one point of Armor health to the hero which will absorb one HP worth of damage. It may not sound like a lot fora tactical game, but characters early on inSteamWorld Heist 2only have about six to eight HP anyway, so this is a relatively good stat boost.

Maintenance Protocol skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

5Maintenance Protocol

Heal The Party

Maintenance Protocol is one of the few healing abilities in the game, apart from using utility items. It’s an Engineer ability and it is a rather high one at that. It’s worth giving it to a couple of heroes though because it can heal four HP in a designated area for multiple characters.

Engineersare practically White Magesin the game which makes sense given that all characters are robots and an engineer should be able to heal, or repair, machines. The only thing missing from most Engineer characters are big white robes, but their support abilities speak for themselves.

Nimble Fleet skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

4Nimble Fleet

Gain Additional Movement Per Turn

Nimble Feet is a character ability for the Flanker class which comes about as close to a rogue hero asSteamWorld Heist 2gets. The ability adds a plus one to character movement, which is great considering some dungeons cover a lot of mileage.

On their own, Flankers have a good foot range. Their other characteristic is their shotgun weapon, which does a lot of damage from behind if players can get the drop on enemies.Shotguns are typically good in video gamesbut some of the examples inSteamWorld Heist 2really showcase their unbridled power.

Reticle Eyes skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

3Reticle Eyes

Weapons Gain Aim

Reticle Eyes is a Sniper ability and it’s another skill that most heroes should have equipped. From the start, Daisy is the MVP of the game without question asa deadly sniper. Her rifle does a lot of damage on its own, but her true power comes with her full ability to see where her bullet line is.

Players can trace the trajectory of her bullets to perform brilliant ricochet moves. While Reticle Eyes doesn’t add the full line of sight for other characters, it’s a start in the right direction to boost the Aim stat.

Sidestep skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

2Sidestep

Teleport Anywhere On The Map

Sidestep is an even better movement-based ability from the Flanker class. It will allow players to teleport around the map once the active ability is charged. Players need to have gone to these areas first, so characters can’t just Willy Nillyteleport to the end of a level like in most games.

It’s a good ability to combine with something like Maintenance Protocol. Players can warp to other characters in need, heal them, and then move on but that’s just one idea for a strategic move.

Slot Machine skill in SteamWorld Heist 2

1Slot Machine

Carry More Utility Items

Slot Machine is attached to the Boomer class which is not some old group of robots inSteamWorld Heist 2. Boomers instead are explosive experts who can equip weapons like bazookas to do a wide area of damage. Slot Machine will allow players to equip one more Utility Item before missions begin. Most characters start with one slot, but they have a total of three that can get unlocked.

As mentioned before, Utility Items are extra skills players can use during missions from healing items to quick pistols to boots that can extend movement areas. There are a lot of ways players can experiment with Utility Items in the game and Slot Machine is a skill that can help with that.
