There’s nothing more dangerous than aSquirrel with a Gun. Even among the field ofanimal mayhem games likeUntitled Goose Game, the squirrel poses a unique threat–and not just because it has a gun.
Squirrel with a Gundeveloper Dan DeEntremont spoke with Game Rant about the kinds of things these armed rodents can do, especially with its pending PC release. Inhabiting the role of the squirrel, players will be able to use a small arsenal of weapons in creative ways, DeEntremont explained. And perfectly complementing that is a wide variety of environments that squirrels can totally survive in, like an underwater anchor.
Squirrel with a Gun Embraces The Animal Mayhem Genre (Exclusive Screens)
One of the interesting waysSquirrel with a Gundifferentiates itself from other animal mayhem games is its focus onphysics-based platforming and puzzle-solving. Guns like the six-shooter or the shotgun don’t just get used to hold up humans or shoot black-suited agents but as a means of traversal. They can be used in a dollhouse, seen above, for pure chaos, or be used when dealing with anchors or cacti. The beauty ofSquirrel with a Guncomes in with the zany and totally realistic environments and situations players can find themselves in, and that’s made even better because, well, the squirrel has a gun.
Squirrels With Guns Can Do Zany Things
The recoil from a weapon is something that humans have to brace themselves for, but for something that weighs as little as a squirrel, that equal-and-opposite force to the firing of a bullet can send the little critter skyrocketing.Different weapons have different kickbacks, as well. For instance, DeEntremont says the squirrel can empty a submachine gun to hover like it has a jetpack where the rocket launcher sends the squirrel high into the air. Other weapons, like the grenade launcher, are less useful as a boost or jump propellant, instead focusing on crowd control.
With a combination of gunplay, acrobatics, and squirrely determination, the player will be able to take on not just humans, like civilians or the agents in pursuit of the squirrel, but also things like tanks and attack helicopters.Platforming challengesallow players to approach the situation they find themselves in strategically, too, which adds a layer of cleverness to the already powerful squirrel. As for how to survive an encounter with an acrobatic armed rodent, DeEntremont was plain: appeasement is the best strategy.
“When they put their minds to it, they’re pretty difficult to stop. Certainly, the bad guys in the game haven’t been able to so far, but I’d say just have a cache of acorns ready and ensure to dole them out if one of them comes along and tries to rob you.”
Thankfully, not all squirrels are hostile. Players can also work with humans, solving their problems to collect acorns as a reward. Whether the squirrel will be a friend or a menace to humanity is up to the player to decide.
