Despite being almost 50 years old now,Star Warsis still one of the most beloved Sci-Fi franchises on the planet, and as such, there are plenty of video game adaptations in the works. In just over a month,Ubisoft’s open-world adventureStar Wars Outlawsis set to launch. BitReactor and Respawn’sStar Warsstrategy game is still in development, as is Amy Hennig’s action-adventureStar Warsproject, and according to some recent leaks, Creative Assembly could be working on aTotal War: Star Wars.
Of all theStar Warsprojects currently in development, few are quite as anticipated asStar Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicRemake, andStar Wars Eclipse. While one is promising a ground-up remake of one of the most belovedStar Warsgames of all time, the other is promising a strong, mature, narrative-driven experience by a renowned developer. But both highly-anticipatedStar Warsprojects seem to be in the same boat, and that boat is sitting in troubled waters.
Star Wars KOTOR Remake and Eclipse Are in the Same Shaky Boat Right Now
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Could Be in Development Hell
Announced all the way back in 2021, it’s been a rough few years forStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. Originally, theKOTORremake was being developed by Aspyr, the same studio behind the vast majority of theStar Warsremasters and ports in recent years. But back in August 2022, a Bloomberg report suggested that Aspyr’s work on theKOTORremake wasn’t meeting Lucasfilm and Sony’s expectations. Following an internal viewing of a vertical slice of the project, the remake was put on hold, and Aspyr was reportedly removed from the project.
In a subsequent report from Bloomberg, it was rumored that Saber Interactive was going to be taking over development onStar Wars: Knights of the Old RepublicRemake, and after a few years of uncertainty, it seems there was truth to that report. In April of this year,IGN interviewed Saber Interactive’s CEO, Matthew Karch, and he revealed that theKOTORremake was in Saber’s hands and that it was apparently “alive and well.” Even with these comments in mind, theKOTORremake still feels like a bit of a pipe dream, and fans won’t be able to breathe a sigh of relief until the game is actually in their hands, likely years down the line.
Star Wars Eclipse Has Gone Radio Silent
Announced back in December 2021,Star Wars Eclipsehas had its own set of development issues. Soon after its announcement,Star Wars Eclipsewas thrust into the spotlight thanks to the ongoing controversies surroundingdeveloper Quantic Dream. Along with a wealth of toxic workplace accusations, Quantic Dream’s founder, David Cage, has been accused of using homophobic and sexist slurs. This led to talk of fans intending to boycottStar Wars Eclipseupon its eventual launch, something that could have easily affected the game’s development. There have also been reports suggesting thatStar Wars Eclipse’s development has slowed due to staff shortages.
The last official word onStar Wars Eclipse’s developmentcame in September of last year, when Quantic Dream’s Vice President of Marketing, Lisa Pendse, confirmed that the game “still exists.” Much likeStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake, it seems unlikely thatStar Wars Eclipseis going to be seen again anytime soon, and even less likely the game will launch within the next few years.
