Summary
Last year saw two hugely popular IPs each receive excellent sequels in their respective franchises. Respawn Entertainment’sStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, the followup toJedi: Fallen Order, and Insomniac Games’Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, gave fans action-packed titles with compelling storylines that continued to build on the strengths and success of their predecessors.Star Wars Jedi: Survivorrefined its Metroidvania-meets-Soulslike design while expanding the world and characters. Likewise,Spider-Man 2was bigger and better in almost every regard, following the duo of Peter Parker and Miles Morales as they dealt with multiple threats to New York City.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s protagonist, Cal Kestis, had grown since the events ofFallen Order, and the unfolding tale of Cal and his close-knit group’s dedication to persevere in the wake of the Empire’s purge of the scattered remains of the Jedi Order took them to dangerous places. Similarly, the relationship between Peter Parker and his protégé, Miles Morales, deepened inSpider-Man 2, and showcased both Spidermen’s distinct flavors of powers and perspectives. As publisher EA basically confirmeda thirdStar Wars Jedititleis in the works, and given the state of affairs at the conclusion ofSurvivor, the next entry is now primed to borrow one ofSpider-Man 2’s best features.
Star Wars Jedi’s Third Entry Could Look to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 For Great Inspiration in One Area
Peter Parker and Miles Morales' Dynamic in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
After starring in their own separate titles previously,Marvel’s Spider-Man 2then brought Peter Parker and Miles Morales together, giving fans the chance to play as either throughout most of the course. Peter had already been showing Miles the ropes, and Miles himself had been training hard to become another friendly neighborhood hero. Players got to switch up between them as they tackled the various villains invading the city via a mechanic that was organic to the story and the characters, allowing a great range of freedom and giving both space to breathe and share the spotlight. This is a template that could also be integrated and applied inStar Wars Jedi’s next chapter.
How Star Wars Jedi’s Next Title Could Use Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Approach to Cal and Kata
One of the big plot twists inStar Wars Jedi: Survivorcomes when former companion,Bode Akuna, turns against Caland his allies, revealing himself to have been secretly working for the Empire. Bode justifies his betrayal by stating it was in service of protecting his daughter, Kata. After confronting and defeating Bode, Cal and his crew take Kata under their wing, providing her with a new family and tutelage.
It’s possible then that as Cal has advanced in his mastery of Jedi powers, he could serve as Kata’s mentor, training her to fight and harness the Force, and this could be the building block of the third game’s direction and plot. The duo could take on aclassic Jedi Masterand Padawan relationship, akin to Peter and Miles. Missions may thus be structured based around this, at least in part, with Cal imparting his wisdom and experience to Kata on her path to becoming a formidable Jedi.
Fallen Ordercontained flashback sequences to Cal’s own training under Jaro Tapal, doling out new abilities as he reawakens his skills. Something similar could be the case inStar Wars Jedi’s threequel, as Cal shows Kata how to become more in tune with the Force and unlock her potential. The story could pick up as Kata is hitting her stride, and see fans split their time and missions between them, having them rejoin at pivotal moments and cinematic sequences. LikeSpider-Man 2, this would have the benefit of offering a suite of unique abilities for both, as Cal perhaps passes the torch to Kata, and she discovers her skillset and hones it along with Cal’s guidance.
