Summary
Not every beat or sequence lands as well as another inStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s story and that’s arguably most apparent when it reaches its third-act twist. Any time a story establishes a particular antagonist or plot and essentially discards it in the third act for what is meant to be a meatier or more empathetic reveal, for instance, it creates an awkward division where the third act can seem rushed or forced. This is not unlikeMarvel’s Spider-Man 2’s third act, which suddenly invites a symbiote invasion into New York City following Kraven’s death, andStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s third act is toiled by its reveal that Bode Akuna was a Jedi like Cal Kestis.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivorcuts corners to ensure this twist is unpredictable, such as not having Bode react at all to the fact that ZN-A4 is a relic from the High Republic era. But what’s more enticing is that if more Jedi like Bode have been hiding as successfully as him, even molding themselves into people with morally ambiguous ambitions who are struggling to survive in an oppressed galaxy, then there is a great chance that others could be run into in a thirdStar Wars Jedigame and show Cal that he’s really not alone and doesn’t need to shoulder the weight of the Jedi Purge by himself or at all.
If Bode Akuna Could Hide, There Could Be Countless Jedi Hidden in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Bode was a neat surprise and if more reclusive refugee Jedi come out of the woodwork it could make for a ton of diverse personalities with tragic anecdotes about thefall of the Jedi Order inSurvivor’s sequel. There aren’t supposed to be many Jedi that the Purge hadn’t successfully wiped out, but a thirdJedigame could certainly explore a handful of survivors who managed to flee as Cal and Bode did, fashioning a consistent throughline between all three games thus far.
If Bode could even be the survivor that the sequel’s title refers to, perhaps the third game could have a subtitle referencing others who had fled the Galactic Empire and are still in hiding. For all players know, crew members of Cal’s such as Gabs, Koob, Lizz, or Bravo might’ve been Jedi but died before Cal could learn their secret. The assumption is that if there were others who were unafraid of taking the fight to the Empire in plain sight as Cal does, surelyCere Junda and Eno Cordovawould’ve made note of them.
Indeed, Bode being able to keep his past a secret from Cal, Cere, and Eno still requires players to suspend their disbelief a bit, especially since Cal probably should’ve been able to witness Bode’s past viaForce psychometry after receiving Bode’s blaster pistol, giving Bode more credit than he likely deserves for being able to suppress his sensitivity to the Force.
On the contrary, Bode gave Cal a blaster that he said he only had since he began freelancing. It’s a stretch either way, but this would be a salient enough reason as to why Cal’s psychometry wouldn’t have been able to detect anything about Bode from before that period.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Sequel Could Make Cal Kestis’ Galaxy a Lot Smaller
Regardless, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear of many more characters who were oncePadawans, Knights, or Mastersliving on any planet imaginable, whether they live to tell their tales for much longer in the canon or not.Fallen Orderensured that there were at least a handful of Force-sensitive children and, while overturning Cal’s choice not to pursue them would be a backslide, a third game could have any number of them appear or be discovered.
Any number of rogue Jedi could prove to be apprehensive or antagonistic and provide Cal with duels against Force- and lightsaber-wielding bosses. If this turns out to be the case and that’s the direction the nextStar Wars Jedientry is headed,Survivor’s Bode could be a precursor to future boss fights and friendly encounters with Jedi who’ve also lost their way.
