While it’s easy to aim for a retro experience in theStar Warsuniverse, the development team is pulling inspiration from many of the multimedia projects the series has had over the years to create a cohesive universe. Some of these inspirations include sightings of enforcer droids fromThe High Republicnovels andThe Clone WarsTV show, the planet Kijimi before itsappearance inThe Rise of Skywalker, and the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate fromSolo: A Star Wars Story. In a recent interview, Game Rant sat down to talk to numerous members ofStar Wars Outlaws' dev team, including art and world director Benedikt Podlesnigg, to discuss their inspirations and references. It’s hard to narrow down what to use between all of these available sources, but in the case of Krayt Dragons, Massive Entertainment had a bit of a helping hand.

Star Wars Outlaws Uses The Mandalorian Krayt Dragon as Reference

While the skeleton of a Krayt Dragon appears inA New Hope, its first major appearance would actually be inthe gameStar Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. They would also appear inKOTORand, most recently,The Mandalorian. Each time they look a little different, leading us to ask how the Krayt Dragons inStar Wars Outlawswere designed. Krayt Dragons in Star Wars Outlaws

The Mandalorianshowseems to put to rest many of the artistic liberties that Krayt Dragons suffered from design-wise, once and for all. At the very least, it seems like Lucasfilm aims to at least make the species consistent because LFL helped Massive Entertainment with its own Krayt Dragon forStar Wars Outlaws. When asked about howOutlawsaimed to adapt the beast from the desert, Podlesnigg revealed exactly how Lucasfilm assisted them with the Krayt Dragons.

“We were lucky that during the production of the game we had the Mandalorian fighting a (different) Krayt Dragon…. We worked closely with LFL who made the show CGI model available to us so we could be as close to the reference as possible.”

UsingThe Mandalorian’s CGI model as a reference forStar Wars Outlawsputs a new meaning to “pulling from the source material,” as it’s surprisingly very literal in this case. However, Podlesnigg does mention that the Mandalorian fights a different Dragon, so there is they still have a unique look only found inOutlaws. Fans can encounter this deadly beast whenStar Wars Outlawsreleases on August 30.
