While it may not have been quite as personal or carefully constructed asStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’s story,Star Wars Jedi: Survivorstill had plenty of engaging narrative moments, andCal Kestis and Bode Akuna’s relationshipwas certainly one of those. A new character for the sequel, Bode Akuna is introduced right at the start ofStar Wars Jedi: Survivor, joining Cal on his covert mission behind enemy lines on Coruscant. Initially, Bode Akuna is presented as a simple Han Solo-like scoundrel, a hired gun with a heart of gold hiding underneath his rough exterior.
AsStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s storyprogresses, Bode continues to cement himself as a core member of Cal Kestis' crew, joining him on his planet-hopping adventure to locate and reach the mythical planet of Tanalorr. Cal’s relationship with Bode deepens alongside the player’s, which makes his eventual betrayal all the more impactful.
Kicking offStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s third act in explosive fashion, Bode Akuna reveals himself to not only be an Imperial Spy, but also a former Jedi. After killing Jedi Master Cordova, Bode tips off the Empire to the Hidden Path’s secret base on Jedha, and he escapes from the planet after briefly facing off against Cal Kestis with his newly revealed Force powers. With Bode Akuna being presented as a stereotypicalStar Warsscoundrel, fans are lulled into a false sense of security, believing they know where the character’s arc is going. This is whyStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s twistworks so well.
Star Wars Outlaws' Premise Paves the Way for a Betrayal
In a scoundrel-focused story likeStar Wars Outlaws, it’s an expectation thatprotagonist Kay Vessis going to get betrayed at least once during the main story. But there are ways Ubisoft could fulfill this prophecy without making it feel cliche. Much likeStar Wars Jedi: Survivor,Star Wars Outlawsshould feature a twist that takes a stereotypicalStar Warscharacter and subverts their usual arc.
For instance,Star Wars Outlaws' final moments could see her being betrayed by ND-5, the BX-Commando Droid who’s appeared throughout the game’s marketing. Named Droids are rarely associated with villainy inStar Wars, and from all the trailers released so far, it seems as though ND-5 is going to be a key ally throughout Kay’s adventure. Flipping this character archetype on its head could lead to an impactful twist inStar Wars Outlaws.
