Massive Entertainment’sStar Wars Outlaws, co-developed and published by Ubisoft, is soon set for release. With the promise of being the first open-world game in the famous galaxy far, far, away,Star Wars Outlawslooks to set itself apart in other notable ways as well. Protagonist and professional thief, Kay Vess, operates outside the bounds of the law and is scraping to survive and thrive in the grimy underworld against various rival Syndicates, all while the Empire seeks to maintain a tight grip on the system and its citizens during the height of its influence.

WithKay being an underhanded scoundrel, she will be attempting to infiltrate, pilfer, and con her way to victory. Inevitably, though, she will run afoul of the above groups, going up against detachments of Imperial enforcers as well as the range of criminal organizations involved in shady dealings throughout her journey.Star Wars Outlawsgame director, Mathias Karlson, explained to Game Rant how the title’s Wanted System was envisioned from the ground up to give players the feeling of truly being an outlaw constantly on the run while granting them a high level of freedom to pick fights with the Empire and the Syndicates.

Star Wars Outlaws' Wanted System Is Baked Into its Vision

Star Wars Outlaws’ Wanted System has previously been compared in some ways toGrand Theft Autobased on some of the preview material. That said, Karlson explained that it seemed only natural to include this design feature as a necessary ingredient from the start, given the other elements in place:

“An open-worldStar Warsgame about an outlaw — a scoundrel — set betweenThe Empire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedi, when the Empire is at the peak of its power and reach. It begs for a Wanted System. It adds not just immersion and fantasy fulfillment, but also dynamic fun to the entire game world — from city streets to space.”

Karlson went on to describe how this approach also helps act as an organic method to increase immersion and the fantasy fulfillment ofStar Wars Outlaws' narrativeand gameplay. These in turn work together to provide a range of possibilities for players to create dynamically emergent and engaging moments across the entirety ofStar Wars Outlaws, from back alleys deals gone wrong to daring raids while navigating the depths of space.

Although players can initiate fights ortake other hostile actions as Kay against enemy forces, they cannot act aggressively towards friendly or other NPCs.

Star Wars Outlaws' Wanted System Will Allow For a Range of Reactivity

As they explore more and take onhigher-risk jobs inStar Wars Outlaws, fans can expect to be able to find themselves in a variety of situations that can easily result in heated conflicts at a moment’s notice depending on their choices and playstyle preference. They might, for example, decide to enact a chain of actions that leads to a massive shootout in the streets of Mos Eisley with mobs of stormtroopers or the Hutts after robbing an Imperial stash or double-crossing a gang leader.

All the elements are in place to let gamers dive headfirst into theseedier side ofStar Wars, and take on waves of stormtroopers or syndicate members inStar Wars Outlawsif they’re so inclined. They won’t need to wait much longer to do so, either, asStar Wars Outlawslaunches on July 22, 2025.

A world that reacts to your actions in an intuitive way and lets you try to fight as many stormtroopers as you can.
