Based on the few trailers released so far, it seems as thoughStar Wars Outlawsis going to be diving into some rather niche aspects ofStar Warslore. Of course, the biggest lore focus ofStar Wars Outlawsis the universe’s many criminal factions, which is something onlySoloand a handful of comic books and novels have explored before.
But being an open-world game, there’s so much more lore thatStar Wars Outlawscould bring to the surface. There are currently five planets confirmed to appear inStar Wars Outlaws, some of which are original creations for the game, and some of which have appeared a few times in canon already. Each of these planets presents a slew of new lore opportunities, from diving into species' cultures to learning more about the planet’s history and the people’s reaction to the ongoing Imperial oppression. But above all else, there’s one piece ofnicheStar Warslorethat the movies gloss over, butOutlawsshould focus on.
Star Wars Outlaws Could Highlight The Universe’s Different Languages
Star Wars Usually Shies Away From Its Alien Languages
When making a movie predominantly for the Western world, especially in the 1970s, it makes complete sense that George Lucas and the rest of the cast and crew wanted to keep English as the primary source of communication inthe originalStar Wars. But being the first entry in a big new Sci-Fi universe, the firstStar Warsalso needed to hint at the galaxy’s many different cultures and languages. To explain the predominance of the English language in the vast majority ofStar Warsmovies, a protocol droid is often used to translate alien languages, or much more simply, it’s stated that most of the galaxy speaks “Galactic Basic.”
But long-time fans ofStar Warswill know just how much work has gone into all ofStar Wars' many different languages. Though the movies only hint at their existence, theStar Warsuniverse is filled with unique dialects, including Huttese, which originated onthe Hutts' homeworld of Nal Huttabut quickly grew in popularity across the criminal-ridden Outer Rim due to the Empire’s lack of knowledge of the language, and Binary, the language of Droids. And this is just scratching the surface ofStar Wars' languages, with practically every major species having at least a few words of their own language written into canon somewhere.
Star Wars Outlaws Has a Golden Opportunity to Highlight Star Wars' Alien Languages
InStar Wars Outlaws, players will mostly be exploring the galaxy’s Outer Rim planets.Star Wars' Outer Rim sectoris filled with criminal activity, with it being far enough away from the Empire’s hub world of Coruscant to avoid full Imperial occupation or enforcement. In the Outer Rim, players should be able to hear plenty of distinct alien languages, with Huttese being the most common in this sector.Star Wars Outlawsshouldn’t shy away from this opportunity to shed more light on the Huttese language.
Language could even be baked into some ofStar Wars Outlaws' game mechanics.Protagonist Kay Vessis bound to meet a swathe of aliens on her space-faring adventure, and with the game seemingly leaning heavily on RPG-like dialogue, it would make sense that players would need to find a protocol droid to be their translator, who players would then take with them to meet new alien allies and clients.
