Summary
IntrepidStarfieldplayers have discovered that a recent major update to the game didn’t just add a driveable ground vehicle, but also the phenomenon of drunk driving. The REV-8 all-terrain rover was added toStarfieldas part of the game’s free August 2024 update.
Despite nearly a year passing since its original release, players are flocking back toStarfield, thanks in part to anticipation over its upcoming Shattered Space expansion, as well as to try out the REV-8, a new driveable vehicle added by the update. The inclusion of the REV-8 marks the first time developer Bethesda has officially incorporated a car into one of its open-world RPGs. It also addresses one of the most persistent complaints about the game, namely that the lengthy distances on the game’s planets made exploring on foot a boring chore. Now players are happilyacquiring the REV-8 rover inStarfieldand taking it all over the Settled Systems.
They’re also finding out that one can drive the REV-8 rover while under the influence of alcohol. As shared by player Deebz__ on theStarfieldReddit community, rover piloting can be affected by a player’s intoxication, where attempting to drive while affected by alcohol can cause the vehicle’s steering to behave erratically.
Starfield Players Find Out That They Can Drive The REV-8 Rover While Drunk
In the clip, Deebz__ demonstrates the phenomenon by approaching their rover and drinking a box ofRed Harvest Single Malt Whiskey, an alcoholic aid item commonly found in-game. After mounting the rover, they attempt to drive, only for the rover to veer off to the left, then turn right, bumping into a rock.
A few commenters suspected that Deebz__ hadmodified theStarfieldREV-8 rover, or was simply steering deliberately as a joke. Deebz__ denied this, saying that the steering faults occurred automatically while attempting to drive the rover in a straight line immediately after drinking alcohol. We tried this ourselves with an unmodified PC copy ofStarfield, and can confirm that the REV-8 veers from side to side for a few seconds when driving the rover while drunk. A single drink of any alcoholic aid item will suffice to induce the behavior, but it recovers quickly.
Another player also confirmed the effect in their comment, saying that they discovered the phenomenon accidentally while drinkingAlien Liquor. Alien Liquor is a favorite hydration item to use inStarfield’s survival mode, as it is one of the easiestaid items to craft inStarfieldusing the cooking station.
The anecdote of drunk driving inStarfieldamused many players, and some praised for Bethesda for its attention to detail. Some even demanded that Bethesda implement “drunk jumping” to add a sense of danger for players attempting aStarfieldgrav jumpwhile under the influence.
