Summary

Street Fighter 6’s director, Takayuki Nakayama, recently showed off a piece of art that depicted Captain Kenzo Sawada from the 1994Street Fighterfilm that went unused in the game.Street Fighter 6has been a grand return to form for Capcom’s legendary fighting game franchise. Capcom’s fighting game has a number of familiar and new faces, either represented as fighters in the roster or opponents in the game’s World Tour Mode. One character that appears to have been considered to make an appearance inStreet Fighter 6was Captain Kenzo Sawada from the 1994 movie.

The1994Street Fighterlive-action movieis one of the strangest adaptations of a video game franchise to the big screen. While it is loosely based onStreet Fighter 2, it makes a lot of changes that make it so different from the game’s lore. The film also introduced an original character named Kenzo Sawada, who was originally going to be a big player in the film, but ended up having his screen time diminished. While Sawada would make an appearance in the cartoon, he is seen as an unmemorable character in the eyes of some fans. Despite this, Sawada has a dedicated fan base in both Japan and within Capcom itself, as evidenced by these recent sketches.

Following a recent Capcom TV stream, Nakayama posted a trio of unused sketches depicting Captain Sawada on his Twitter account, stating it was done by a staff member who was a big fan of Sawada. These sketches show him shirtless, in uniform, and striking a pose ready to train. This appears to have been an attempt by Capcom to officially include theobscureStreet Fightercharacterin an official game, but for some reason, Sawada was not implemented.

Captain Sawada’s Push to Be a Part of Street Fighter’s Universe

While Sawada is technically already a part of theStreet Fighteruniverse, as he has an official Shadaloo C.R.I. character profile, he has only been playable in one game before: theStreet Fighterlive-action movie spin-off game. While he is still an obscure character in theStreet Fighterfranchise, there’s still some push by fans for his inclusion inStreet Fighter 6. That said, if Sawada were to make it into the game, he’d likely appear asan NPC or opponent inStreet Fighter 6’s World Tour mode, much like how Retsu fromStreet Fighter 1made a surprise re-appearance in the campaign mode.

While theStreet Fighterlive-action projects have been a mixed bag, Capcom is having a third go at it in collaboration with Legendary Entertainment and Sony Pictures. While the film doesn’t have a director, the upcoming live-actionStreet Fightermovie has a release dateof July 31, 2025. Hopefully, this film will hit all the notes that the otherStreet Fighteradaptations were unsuccessful in doing.
