Summary
Street Fighter 6producer Shuhei Matsumoto expressed his desire to add more guest fighters to the game, following the addition of Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui as DLC characters for the game’s Year 2 pass.Street Fighter 6’s roster has been steadily growing with veterans and newcomers alike, making a total of 18 characters following the Year 1 Character Pass. The Year 2 pass is looking to be one of the most anticipated DLCs for the game, as it features a returning M. Bison and Elena, along with two guest characters: Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui from SNK’sFatal Furyfranchise.
Terry and Mai’s inclusion inStreet Fighter 6’s Year 2 Passwas extremely well-received, as this marks the first time that aStreet Fightergame will be adding characters from a third-party property. Previous guest fighters inStreet Fighterare usually characters from other Capcom franchises likeFinal Fight. With Mai and Terry’s inclusion inStreet Fighter 6, the road has opened for more potential guest spots, which producer Shuhei Matsumoto hopes can come about after the two characters are added.
In an interview with IGN, Matsumoto was asked how he felt about other guest fighters being added to the fighting game in the future. Matumoto answers that he hopes that theFatal Furycrossover DLC forStreet Fighter 6can create more opportunities for other IPs to enter the ring. Matsumoto notes that he saw the incredibly positive response that Terry and Mai received, and that kind of reaction is what they’re looking for, despite the hurdles they needed to overcome to make it happen. “This was quite a big challenge for us to even incorporate these guest characters…but hopefully things move forward in a positive way, and there’s more opportunities that open up for us,” Matsumoto said.
Street Fighter 6’s Possible Crossovers
Matsumoto wasn’t the only one who was asked about potential guest stars for the game, asStreet Fighter 6’s director was also inquired about addingMortal Kombatcharactersto the roster. Director Takayuki Nakayama stated that guest fighters aren’t necessarily a negative, and that they could help bring attention to other fighting game franchises, but could also potentially snub fan favorite characters that fans wanted to see return inStreet Fighter6.
This was quite a big challenge for us to even incorporate these guest characters…but hopefully things move forward in a positive way, and there’s more opportunities that open up for us.
Matsumoto was also asked aboutpotential future Capcom vs. crossover games, following the surprise re-release ofSNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaosand the upcomingMarvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Arcade Classics. Matsumoto says that Capcom does have “big dreams” of making more crossover fighting games, along with re-releasing some of its legacy fighting games to modern systems for fans so that it can open the door to do “bigger” things. For the time being, Terry Bogard is slated to be the second DLC character forStreet Fighter 6, and will be added to the game sometime this Fall.
