Summary
Since Spring 2024,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas slowly added new story content via the introduction of new playable characters. These villainous additions stem from other dimensions where other civilization-collecting Brainiacs took over alternate Earths. In Season 1, a younger version of the Joker was added to the squad, and in the recent Season 2, a female version of Mister Freeze called Mrs. Freeze reluctantly joined the squad.
While these additions spotlight alternate dimensions in the vast DC Comics multiverse, they haven’t really pushedSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s story that much forward or introduced more depth to the characters. This could be rectified in upcoming seasons with the introduction of Zoe Lawton, Deadshot’s daughter, and Deathstroke.
Developed by Rocksteady Studios,Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueis set in the same universe as the celebratedBatman: Arkhamgames. Taking placefive years after the events ofBatman: Arkham Knight, Advanced Research Group United Support Director Amanda Waller is forced to assemble Task Force X, otherwise known as the Suicide Squad, after the Justice League becomes compromised by Brainiac and his invading forces in Metropolis. Throughout the game, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang kill members of the Justice League one-by-one with technological assistance from multiple Lex Luthors and other villains.
Eventually, the squad discovers that this Brainiac isn’t just invading Arkham Earth but is working with 12 other alternate Brainiacs to take over the multiverse. By the end ofSuicide Squad’s base game, the squad is able to defeat the Arkham Brainiac but must now travel to other Earths to kill their Brainiacs and stop the multiversal domination. Over the course of two seasons and four episodes on top of the base game, four Brainiacs have been taken out on the Brainiac Kill List. Joker joined the Squad after his squad was wiped out by his Brainiac, whileMrs. Freeze froze her Earthafter the fight with Brainiac was seen as unwinnable.
A Mrs. Freeze has appeared in DC Comics before but was depicted as a villainous, revived Nora instead of a gender-swapped Victor Fries.
WithSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice LeagueSeason 3 and Season 4 expected to debutZoe Lawton and Deathstroke as playable squad members, Rocksteady should use these expansions to delve more into the game’s story. It’s likely these new squad members will also come from alternate Earths, just as Joker and Freeze did before them, but both could introduce thematic complexities to the rest of the squad. In Deathstroke’s case, Rocksteady could depict him as one who actually took out the Dark Knight inBatman: Arkham Originsand subsequently eliminated the rest of the Justice League. This could have left his Earth more vulnerable to Brainiac’s invasion and made him more remorseful for his actions.
In Zoe Lawton’s case, she could come from an Earth where her dad died instead of the other Deadshot. In the A.R.G.U.S. Tapes, Floyd Lawton revealed that he killed the other Deadshot but was nearly shot as well by a couple millimeters. This Zoe Lawton could have taken up her dad’s mantle and became the new Deadshot and later assassinated both the otherDeadshot and John Stewart/Green Lantern. If this turns out to be true, Rocksteady could have the Lawtons struggle to talk with one another as Zoe would see Arkham’s Deadshot as a ghost, while Floyd could see Zoe as his worst nightmare come to life, since he never wanted his family to get involved with his criminal life.
Little is told so far about how exactly the Brainiacs managed to conquer the other Earths, but Rocksteady could detail these narratives with more optional dialogue or collectibles. While Brainiac is no pushover, several books and evenother games such asInjustice 2have shown how effective the Justice League or even Superman alone could take down the Coluan. Fleshing out these alternate Earths with more lore about how they’re different or how they were conquered could help make players more interested in completing each new season inSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
