It has been nearly a decade since Wanda Maximoff joined theMarvel Cinematic UniversewithAvengers: Age of Ultron. Over the years, the Avenger has become quite important to the overall MCU. Yet, despite being important, Scarlet Witch has yet to truly have her time to shine.
Serving as one of the main Avengers in the franchise sinceAge of Ultron, Elizabeth Olsen has continued to deliver a stellar performance as Wanda with each new project. However, as was once the case with Black Widow, Scarlet Witch is long overdue for her own film.WandaVisionwas close, and was a huge piece within theMarvel Cinematic Universe’s storytelling, but Wanda deserves more than a limited series.
WandaVision Was Only the Beginning
Much like Black Widow before her, fans of Marvel Studios' long-running franchise have been eager to see Olsen lead her own film. Unfortunately, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige shot down rumors of Wanda leading her own film. However, the studio did eventually surprise fans with news that Scarlet Witch would be receiving her own series for Disney+ alongside Vision. The limited series woulddelve deeper into Wanda’s character, focusing on her grief at having lost Vision and her brother. It also served as a lead up to theDoctor Strangesequel,Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Yet, while WandaVision was an exciting project for Scarlet Witch, it was hardly the solo project that fans had been hoping to see. The series brought forth another side of Wanda fans hadn’t seen before: one who had given into her pain and grief and gone toward the darker side as a means of coping. Now withAgatha All Alongset to debut, which willgive fans a better understanding of Agatha Harkness, it seems like a great time to give Scarlet Witch the movie she’s long deserved.
Agatha All Alongproves thatthere’s more story to explorefollowing the events ofWandaVisionandMultiverse of Madness. One of the biggest questions fans have had is whether Scarlet Witch is dead, and if Olsen is set to return to the MCU anytime soon. While the actress has played coy regarding her future with Marvel, Feige has teased that Wanda did not perish inMultiverse of Madness. After watching Wanda suffer over the years, after losing Pietro, Vision, and her children, it feels like the perfect time to let Wanda shine in a solo film that could bring the character full circle.
Rumors of a Scarlet Witch Movie Have Been Ongoing
Given Wanda’s continued importance to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, rumors of a solo film for the character have long been discussed. In fact, prior toWandaVision, Olsen herselfoffered her own hopes of a Scarlet Witch movieand what she’d like it to be about. Yet, despite the rumors, the project never came to fruition.
Now thatWandaVisionis in the past, however, thoserumors have begun to circulate once again. It has been said that, after a long turn, Marvel Studios is moving forward with a Scarlet Witch solo movie. Details beyond that are currently unknown as to what the movie could be about, or what stage the project is thought to be in. However, with San Diego Comic-Con around the corner, it could be that Marvel Studios will surprise fans with more as yet unannounced film projects, including a Scarlet Witch movie.
Then again, this could be a case of yet another rumor that ends up going nowhere. As it stands, Marvel Studios is being more careful regarding its output followingpoor box office performances by films likeThe MarvelsandAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. This could prevent some of the projects in development from ever going into production.
However, it’s also worth noting that Black Widow had long been rumored to receive a standalone film before she received one in 2021. That movie, of course, focused on Natasha’s found family before leading up toher death inAvengers: Endgame. With Olsen having recently said she wants to focus on projects outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, perhaps Scarlet Witch will see her story wrapped up in a solo film, too. This could explain the long wait for a project fans have been eagerly awaiting for years. Then again, it’s possible Marvel Studios isn’t ready to announce any new projects yet, especially withBladestill serving as a problem for the studio.
Fans canwatchWandaVisionon Disney+now, along withDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Those eager to return to Westview, with or without the Scarlet Witch, can check out that series in September when it debuts on the streaming service. As of now, it’s unknown when — or if — Scarlet Witch will return in any future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
