Summary

While theGame of Thronesfranchise has hit a bit of a stumbling block with the season finale for the latest season ofHouse of the Dragon, the next spinoff of the iconic franchise has reared its head in its first promotional appearance.

Game of Throneswas one of the greatest triumphs ever seen for an adaptation of an existing work, bringing George R.R. Martin’sA Song of Ice and Fireto life in a brilliant show that captivated audiences for almost 8 whole seasons on HBO. This success and the wealth of related content in Martin’s body of work that hadn’t been adapted madeGame of Thronesperfect for a plethora of spinoffs. Whilesome of the initial spinoff ideas were scrapped by HBO, a few survived, such as the now-prominentFire and Bloodadaptation titledHouse of the Dragonand another planned adaptation of the books in theTales of Dunk and Eggseries.

Sunday’sHouse of the Dragonseason 2 finale disappointed fans with a lackluster storylinethat did a lot to set up the next installment of the series and offered pretty much nothing else in the present, but the franchise also offered up a sneak peek at something a bit more immediately interesting. In a promotional spot for theMaxstreaming service, which can be seen on the company’s YouTube channel, fans of theGame of Thronesfranchise got their first look at the upcoming spinoff seriesA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, with the two central characters making their first on-screen appearances in the short clip.

The series, which took the name of the three-book collection of the first three books in the series, is currently set for a 2025 release. The official logline for the series has been available for a while now, and gives fans new to the material a good overview of what to expect.

A century before the events of “Game of Thrones,” two unlikely heroes wander Westeros. In an adaption of George R. R. Martin’s novella “The Hedge Knight,” a young and naive but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg, face a series of dangerous exploits. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and images of the last dragon have not yet passed from living memory, great destinies and powerful foes await these improbable and incomparable friends.

Peter Claffey plays the lead role of Sir Duncan, and Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg in the story, which takes place about 90 years before the events of the first season of Games of Thrones, judging from the timeline in the source material. While short, the clip does show a lot of what fans expect from the visuals of the franchise in the gorgeous costumes and impressive landscapes drenched in the now-familiar dreary tones that so fittingly encapsulate the realities of that world. The snippet of footage from the upcoming show came at the tail end of a week of bad news, asHouse of the Dragonalso suffered a massive leak for the second time, with its second season finale leaking online in a similar fashion to how the first season’s last episode leaked. Surprisingly, this leak did little to actually frontload the controversy surrounding the events of the episode.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knightis really just the tip of the iceberg, as theGame Of Thronesuniverse is set to get bigger with potential animated spin-offs, as revealed earlier this year. There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of potential to explore the world of the Seven Kingdoms in both the confirmed and planned future projects, and fans can even look forward to a reprieve from the grand narratives and complex machinations as they settle in with Dunk and Egg.

Game of Thronesand its spinoff series are available to stream on Max, withA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knightset for a 2025 premiere.

Game of Thrones, based on the Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin, tells the sprawling story of warring families in Westeros. This includes the Starks, the Lannisters, the Baratheons, and the Targaryens. Along with human conflicts, Westeros is also threatened by the re-emergence of dragons, and an undead enemy from beyond the Wall.
