AMinecraftrelic has been rediscovered with the recovery of the long-lost original stream that helped kick off the Herobrine myth into widespread popularity. While not the first “sighting,” as screenshots of theMinecrafturban legend had emerged prior, this was the first time Herobrine showed up on video.
The Herobrine mythis nearly as old asMinecraftitself. It all started when one player uploaded an image of what looked like Steve with whited-out eyes staring at them from a distance. After trying to learn more about the mysterious figure, thinking it was perhaps another player, their posts allegedly began to get removed from the board they were making them on, with a reponse from a user named “Herobrine” following, telling them to stop. From there, the myth had already started to grow, with some believing that Herobrine was Notch, the developer ofMinecraft, or perhaps a deceased relative.
While the original images spotting Herobrine are still around, the first stream of a person spotting the character in-game was lost to time, until now. The video gained a ton of traction online, but was ultimately lost just a year after being posted. Now, following some community outreach videos regardingHerobrine’s mythand Copeland’s stream, a YouTuber by the name of brutallillfjomp discovered that the stream, which they still had a downloaded copy of, was lost. In response, brutallillfjomp uploaded the video to their own channel, giving fans of the myth a chance to see it for the first time in nearly fifteen years. How Did The Minecraft Stream Propel the Herobrine Myth?
Minecraftstreamer Copeland apparently saw the images and evolving myth back in 2010 and decided to take it further by having Herobrine appear in his stream. The original stream went on for quite some time without anything out of the ordinary happening, until Copeland steps into a room in his base, where Herobrine is standing still and staring at the player. He screamed in response and ran off, ending the stream shortly thereafter. The careful execution of the prank helped to propel the myth into widespread popularity, which ultimatelycemented Herobrine as part ofMinecraftlore.
In retrospect, the video and set-up are quite simplistic. Copeland admitted later on that he had set up a Herobrine painting in the room and was avoiding it for the entirety of the stream intentionally to create a believable scare. It didn’t take much, though, and the subtlety helped to make it believable. While Herobrine has been repeatedly labeled a hoax, it nonetheless haskeptMinecraftplayers captivated for years, due in large part to this escalation of the myth’s so-called sightings. And with this, a little piece ofMinecrafthistory has finally been restored.
