Deathboundis a journey through the world of Zieminal, a world that once had a modern/futuristic society that fell to ruin. The medieval societies that rose from the ruins are divided, with the Church of Death enacting a grand crusade on the inhabitants of Akratya. You play several characters whose essence has been absorbed and linked together, forcing them to share one body that transforms into whoever is currently in control.

These Fallen make up your party inDeathbound, working together to overcome the perils of Akratya as the Crusaders burn all who oppose them and monsters created by the Essencemancers are released in an effort to slow their advance. The first of these Fallen that you’ll get to control is Therone Guillauman, Crusader of Death. This grim warrior uses a Sword and Shield to weather enemy attacks and strike back in turn, rewarding patience and good timing with perfect blocks and ripostes.

Gameplay Overview

Therone Guillauman plays very similarly to your typical Soulslike Knight, using a Sword and Shield to deflect attacks and cut down foes. Therone can block by holding down the left bumper, preventing incoming damage at the cost of some stamina, with perfectly timed blocks draining far less stamina. He can also perform a parry by tapping the left trigger, which will deflect a human-sized enemy’s attack and leave them open to a riposte. By pressing the attack button (right bumper) after a successful parry, Therone will plunge his sword into the reeling foe for massive damage.

Overall, Therone’s weapon of choice and higher-than-average health make him the party’s tank. He’s well-rounded but with a focus on defense, making him perfect for charging into battle and learning the attack patterns of bosses. His damage leaves something to be desired, so it’s best to use Morph Strikes to swap in someone with more kick when an opportunity for damage presents itself.

Notes and Comments

Purifying Flames

Increases the Fire Tolerance of All Bound Essences.

This one can be useful once you start running into enemies that inflict fire damage, though it’s far from essential unless they start giving you trouble.

Death’s Grace

Therone’s Morph Strikes have a 15% Life Steal Bonus.

This is incredibly helpful for improving party survivability as you explore, especially since Rest spots can be few and far between.

Thou Shalt Kill

Can Morph during Ripostes to increase damage using Sync.

If you’re good at parrying, this can be a great way to boost your damage, but it’s only useful when facing human-sized enemies that can be parried.

Zealot’s Burden

Recieves 5% Shield Stability for each Conflict Therone has.

Given that Therone gets on poorly with the next two party members you get, this talent is easy to activate and can make blocking attacks a bit less draining.

Holy Retribution

Parried Enemies take more Damage.

Much like Thou Shalt Kill, this Talent is reliant on being up against human-sized enemies and being good at parrying. If both these criteria are met, however, this can be an excellent damage boost.

Ever Vigilant

Shield Absorption Increases with Missing Sync. Zero Sync gives a full Absorption Bonus.

This one is a little hard to recommend, since you’ll be building up Sync fairly quickly during combat and will rarely see the Zero Sync bonus. That said, Shield Absorption is hugely useful and well worth the investment.

Knight-Commander

While in Synergy, gain 50% Stamina Cost Reduction on next Attack after Blocking Hits.

This Talent can make sneaking in attacks after blocks much easier and help to reduce stamina drain, so it’s worth picking up if you enjoy blocking and counterattacking.
