Summary
This article contains spoilers from Tower of God Season 2 Episode 5
The fifth episode ofTower of Godseason 2 finally allows the audience to catch up with what Khun Aguero has been up toin the six years since Bam’s “death”. The most shocking development is seeing his current relationship with Rachel, who he has been taking care of since after news spread about what happened to Bam.
It looks friendly at first, but there’s anything but goodwill between Rachel and Khun Aguero Agnes.
A New Challenger Is Introduced To The Fans
Introducing Dan
Khun tries to coax an individual thought to be the very fastest on the 25th floor of the Tower into joining his team. In addition to his immense speed, Edin Dan is extremely knowledgeable about Shinheuh (“Divine Sea Creatures”), and is the only one capable of catching one called the Silver Fish. Despite his glowing reputation and the vast number of Regulars that would like torecruit him as a Scout, he refuses to advance because he no longer wants to experience the bloodshed involved with tests. Aguero, however, has no time nor concern for Dan’s personal issues, and desperately wants him to join his team no matter what. Upon hearing Aguero’s intentions, Dan tries to refuse, but a large sample of Suspendium, a cobalt-colored rock that enables Lighthouses to float.
Aguero tells Dan that everyone in the restaurant where they’re having their meeting is actually on his payroll and have been ordered not to allow him to leave. If he can escape without getting caught, then Khun will forget about recruiting him. Unperturbed, Dan thinks he has gained the upper hand as he steals the Suspendium and uses his The Flash-like speed to bolt out of there. This scene might have been the most painful to watch with its sluggish-looking, unconvincing animation whenever it came to Dan’s speed. Dan approaches the exit unimpeded, but Khun is several steps ahead: the only person he has actually paid is the bartender, who stealthily uses a tranquilizer gunto subdue Dan.
Khun Aguero’s Team
Who’s Who In The Zoo?
Dan is dragged off to Khun’s base of operations, where we are introduced to Khun’s teammates. When Dan comes to, he finds himself being carefully observed by a tall man who introduces himself twice as Novick, a Spear Bearer. Dan instantly realizes that he’s been outplayed, and settles into the fact that he must now be part of a team. He asks Novick why Khun is so determined to climb the tower, and that’s how we come to learn that Aguero has developed some kind of close relationship with Rachel, one where she asks him for all kinds of help. He takes care of her and comforts her when she’splagued by nightmares of Bamcalling out from the abyss. Dan mistakes this relationship as a romantic one; however, Novick warns him not to do that, or talk about their relationship. Rachel has maintained various aspects of her lie, and is capable of crying crocodile tears to make herself look truly haunted by what happened.
Rachel
Shameless Parasite (special position)
Elsewhere, Dan is introduced to the other members of the team, and a strength-based hierarchy is established; however, only Ran and Novick are interested, leading to a hilarious reference to Yamcha’s embarrassing death during the Saiyan Saga ofDragon Ball Zwhen Dan tries to go against them. Novick and Ran have a rivalry spurred on by the former’s desire to finally beat the latter in a fight. It was a very brief affair that left much to be desired when it comes to the visuals and getting a sense of what either one can do in a combat situation. While the team tries to establish its new pecking order, Aguero reassures Rachel, and it even looks like there’s a genuine connection between them, but as soon as he leaves, she shows her true colors. Aguero washes his hands immediately after the encounter, as if he’d touched a foul beast while talking to Shibisu via their Pockets, telling him thatthe truth is that Rachel killed Bam. While she was shamelessly prancing around her bedroom, Khun’s Lighthouse observed her from outside.
The Flashback
Khun Has Known The Truth All Along
The episode shows flashes from the past weaved into the present, and Khun’s conversation with Shibisu takes us back to not long after Bam’s death, when he entrusted Shibisu with the truth about Rachel. According to doctors, the injury that paralyzed her simply couldn’t have done so, leading Khun to believe she’d been lying. Beyond that, the test director on the second floor, Yu Han Sung, knew about Rachel’s condition, so there must be more to the situation than meets the eye. In order to protect the team unified by what happened to Bam, Khun chose to shoulderthe burden of carrying Rachelup the tower and the suspicion that she was behind Bam’s death. He and Shibisu split up, with Khun forming a new team with Rachel while Shibisu led the rest of Bam’s friends in a separate group.
In the evening, Khun gathers his team and tells them that they will climb the Tower in a month’s time, highlighting his goal of becoming head of the Khun family, promising that he’ll give his teammates anything they desire should he realize his goal. In exchange, they are to protect Rachel, pretending to be her friends while ensuring not to develop feelings of affection for her. They should be more than willing to abandon her at the drop of a hat and able to ignore her screams should it come to that. Khun’s entire personality around Rachel is a complete fabrication hiding a burning hatred, and it has weighed on him for six whole years. Rachel is then shown laughing maniacally.
Viole’s Grace
Ja Wangnan and the others show up at the very end of the episode. Prince and Miseng get along fairly well, while Yihwa has developed a strange obsession with Viole borne from suspicion and fear. As it turns out, they now live together in a building Viole rented, and he even does his fair share of cooking and chores.Yihwa is a terrible cook, as her inability to control her flames translates to an inability to cook without burning food to a crisp. When she hears that Viole has gone somewhere, Yihwa tails him, only to encounter a large man pretending to be Jue Viole Grace and threatening Hwaryun.
The real Jue Viole stands up and knocks out the imposter before Hwaryun brings his attention to Yihwa, whose face registers some level of disappointment.Tower of Godseason 2 episode 5 was immensely significant to the plot as it finally showed some of the cast from the first season, and it is likely that the two casts will cross paths very soon. From a visual standpoint, the animation was rather disappointing, and theflashes of quality in the first episodehaven’t quite translated over the subsequent episodes. Despite there being some great background art breathing life into the series, the effects and combat leave much to be desired.
