These are bold leaps, but it also raises the question of how other Supermassive Games will be handled in the future.
The Until Dawn Remake Could Begin a Troubling Trend For Other Supermassive Games Titles
Beginning Remakes Too Soon Could Backfire
It hasn’t really been that long sinceUntil Dawnfirst launched, so a remake is definitely surprising. Thechanges being made toUntil Dawncould prove to be far too risky in the end, and mixing that with a live action movie could bleed over into other Supermassive Games titles. IfUntil Dawnis getting a remake this early on, thenMan of Medanwould naturally be next in line. A game released in 2019 simply doesn’t need a remake.
Until Dawnhas grown into a cult classic among many horror fans, so it makes sense as to why Ballistic Moon would want to remake it. However, there is also the argument to be made that a remake is happening way too soon to actually warrant it. Granted,theUntil Dawnremake is adding new contentthat could increase the scares, but if it sells well, it wouldn’t be surprising for the other follow-up choice-based titles to get the same treatment.
The Problem With an Until Dawn Cinematic Universe
Amovie adaptation ofUntil Dawnis understandable, since the game’s inspiration comes from the long history of horror films and pop culture based around a group of scared teens. However, the same question about remakes still stands. One wonders if the broader Supermassive Games roster get their own movies, too. The main difference between the problems of a remake and a movie adaptation is thatUntil Dawn’s age isn’t relevant to a live action film. Adapting games into movies is simply a way to broaden a franchise’s audience, but each Supermassive Games title getting live-action versions might still be confusing, since the games feature Hollywood actors anyway.
Until Dawn Could Stand On Its Own
Of course, Supermassive Games' choice-based titles that followed afterUntil Dawnweren’t as popular. Compared to the game that started it all,Until Dawnstill remains the most notable out of the roster. Supermassive Games has unfortunately not been able to recapturethe magic ofUntil Dawn, so a movie version or a remake of other titles may not have the same monetary pull.
