Summary

Astro Botwill allow players to make use of Kratos’s Leviathan Axe from the recentGod of Wargames, Sony has confirmed. The upcomingPlayStation 5exclusive is hence set to become the second non-God of Wargame that lets players wield Kratos’s mythical weapon.

The inclusion of the Leviathan Axe into the new platformer may not come as a surprise to the most attentive of fans, not least because this addition has already been teased as part of theAstro Botannouncement trailerin late May 2024. Specifically, the three-minute video featured a segment in which a robot rendition of Kratos throws the Leviathan Axe to the game’s protagonist, who catches it but immediately collapses under its immense weight.

Astro Will Be Able To Wield Kratos’s Leviathan Axe

Three months later, Sony has now expanded on this teaser as part of theAstro Botlaunch trailerthat went live on August 30, a week ahead of the game’s market debut. Around the 1:29 mark, the clip shows a continuation of the aforementioned scene, in which Astro manages to pick up the Leviathan Axe from the ground with a flashy flourish. The robot then makes a pirouette, at the end of which it seemingly transforms into Kratos, beard and all. The trailer then showcases two brief segments of the protagonist using the axe to dispatch enemies and even challenging a boss who looks like an oversized warthog.

Leviathan Axe Will Only Be Available in a Single Astro Bot Level

Unsurprisingly, Kratos’s Leviathan Axe will not be available throughout the whole game. That’s according to Team Asobi boss Nicolas Doucet, who said as much in a recentPlayStation Blog post, revealing that Kratos will only lend his weapon to Astro as part of a singleGod of War-themed level. While the industry veteran did not reveal any more details on the matter, the game’s launch trailer at the very least confirms that Astro will be able to both swing the axe and throw it, thus mimicking Kratos’s own moveset.Astro Botwill be the second-ever game outside of theGod of Warfranchise to let players use Kratos’s Leviathan Axe, afterFortniteadded it as a Pickaxe skin in late 2020.

Kratos will be far from the only Sony character to make an appearance in the upcoming game. Much likeAstro’s Playroomthat preceded it,Astro Botseeks to leverage the full strength of the PlayStation brandthrough a wide variety of crossovers. Sony has so far confirmed or teased cameos fromRatchet and Clank,Ico,Uncharted, andApe Escape, among other popular franchises. Even Crash Bandicoot is set to make an appearance in the upcoming platformer, despite being owned by Microsoft nowadays.

Team Asobi’s latest title is scheduled to hit the digital and physical store shelves on September 6. And while it’s launching as a PS5 exclusive,Astro Botcould also be coming to PC in the foreseeable future, as Doucet himself recently suggested.
