Summary
Despite two memorable performances from Lucius Hoyos and Gwen Jones, Young Gomez and Young Morticia Addams only appear very briefly in Netflix’sWednesday. Since Season 1 ofWednesdaytakes place in the present day, there’s only a handful of scenes featuring Young Gomez and Morticia, but Hoyos and Jones made sucha lasting impact that it might be worth revisiting the characters for Season 2.
Young versions of Gomez and Morticia Addams appear in flashbacks in Episode 5: “You Reap What You Woe.” The flashbacks chronicleGomez and Morticia’s involvement in the “murder” of Garrett Gates. While Wednesday Addams investigates at Nevermore’s 1990 Rave’N Dance in the present day, adult Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzmán) retell the story as they recall it. Young Gomez and Morticia are often seen in old photographs scattered around Nevermore, which displeases Wednesday, who wishes to come out from under her parent’s shadow.
InWednesday’s many flashbacks, it is revealed that Gomez and Morticia met and fell in love at Nevermore. In one flashback, Wednesday learns that Morticia was the one who killed Garrett Gates, a local boy who became infatuated with Morticia and subsequently tried to kill Gomez in a jealous rage. At the time of the murder taking place, Sheriff Galpin suspected Gomez of intentionally murdering Gates, but later evidence confirms that Gates died from unintentional nightshade poisoning.
Wednesday Needs To Give Gwen Jones and Lucius Hoyos Another Chance To Shine
Wednesdaywas the first acting credit for Gwen Jones, while Hoyos has played quite a few roles before Gomez Addams. He was the voice of Carlos inPAW Patrol, portrayed Parsley inLittle Charmers, Jose Gutierrez onHeroes Reborn, and McCalister on Netflix’sBetween, among other notable credits. While Jones and Hoyos aren’t the most memorable part ofWednesday, they certainly leave their mark as worthy successors to Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán fora potential prequel series, which is already a highly requested project from theWednesdaycommunity.
Jones and Hoyos' performances were so well received thatWednesdayfans have been calling for a prequel series to be made. WhileWednesdayonly offers a small glimpse into the lives of a Young Gomez and Morticia,a prequel series could further explore the shenanigans the couple would inevitably get themselves into. A prequel series would also offer a morecomprehensive rundown of the Addams Family history, specifically how the family became so infamous and how each family member was brought into the fold.
There’s Still Much To Be Discovered About Gomez and Morticia’s Past
Not too much has been revealed about Gomez and Morticia’s past in the Addams Family timeline. In the 1964 sitcom,The Addams Family, Gomez is portrayed as being of Spanish descent, sickly and unwell before meeting Morticia, and a law student. As an adult, he is an athletic billionaire with a knack for sword-fighting.The Addams Family’s rendition of Morticia sees her strumming a Japanese shamisen or tending to her exotic pet, a carnivorous plant named Cleopatra. Morticia seems to have a more colorful background than Gomez, as the sitcom traces her family tree back to the witch trials era of Salem, Massachusetts. Morticia herself has been referred to as a “witch” on numerous occasions and witchcraft is also implied to be part of her heritage.Gomez might even have supernatural powers of his ownin Season 2, which ties in to Morticia’s witchy upbringing.
There are different allusions as to how Gomez and Morticia met and fell in love. InThe Addams FamilyepisodeGreen-Eyed Gomez, it’s mentioned that Gomez first fell in love with Morticia when he saw her riding “sidesaddle on a buffalo.” It is additionally implied in the two-part story “Morticia’s Romance” that Gomez was to be married to Morticia’s sister, Ophelia Frump, whom Gomez’s mother had selected for him. When Morticia came along for the ride, the pair instantly formed a connection. In the 1990sAddams Familymovies, Gomez and Morticia met at a funeral, where Gomez turned on the charm by saying that Morticia was so beautiful, it distracted from the sight of the corpse.
WhileWednesdayhas already written in a chapter of Gomez and Morticia’s love story, there are still countless possibilities for how their story could evolve. Executive producer Tim Burton has his own vast knowledge of gothic horror and troubled romances (see: Barnabas and Angelique fromDark Shadowsand Edward Scissorhands and Kim Boggs inEdward Scissorhands), so it wouldn’t be too difficult to do a deep dive into Gomez and Morticia’s history. After Gomez was exonerated from a crime he didn’t commit, the rest of the pages in Gomez and Morticia’s story as young adults remain blank. That’s either for the audience to fill in or for a potential prequel to flesh out. Ifan Uncle Fester spin-off might be in the works, there’s no reason a prequel series couldn’t be.
Either way, Gomez and Morticia’s story isn’t done yet. There’s still a lot to be explored between the patriarch and matriarch of the Addams Family. Even ifWednesdaydoesn’t address their past in Season 2 any further, there’s still hope that a potential prequel serieswill tell all about one of history’s most fascinating couples.
