These new foes wield powerful gear, and are sure to make an impression whenever the Tarnished find themselves in their presence. One of the most striking aspects of these Black Knights, is the incredible design of their equipment. Players will likely wonder if they can wield thetools of the Black Knightthemselves. Luckily, the answer is yes. This guide will focus on collecting one specific Black Knight item, theBlack Steel Greatshield.

You will see this defensive tool in the hands of the Black Knights that roam the Realm of Shadow, and this guide will explain how you’re able to get your own.
Black Steel Greatshield Overview: Stat Requirements, Effects, & Skill
Weighty shields carried by the Black Knights, servants of Messmer the Impaler. Made of black steel with decorative embellishments in gold. Symbolic of their iron conviction, the Black Knights will never yield. Nor will they ever doubt their purpose.
InElden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, theBlack Steel Greatshieldis a new Greatshield of the Strike shield type. The Black Steel Grestshield is extremely sturdy, with a particularly high Holy damage negation stat of 84 at its base level.
The Black Steel Greatshield can be upgraded usingSmithing Stones to +25, and can benefit from spell-based or consumable buffs.
The Black Steel Greatshield is capable of reaching a perfect 100 Holy damage negation when infused with a Sacred skill, such asAsh of War: Holy Ground. This makes dealing with certain enemies, like a certain final boss, slightly more manageable.

Black Steel Greatshield Weapon Skill: Shield Bash
The Black Steel Greatshield Ash of War isAsh of War: Shield Bash, which can be changed.
This weapon skillcosts 10 FPto cast, and cannot be chained into a follow-up attack.
Brace behind shield before using bodyweight to ram foes while maintaining a guarding stance. Weaker enemies will be shoved backwards, and can even be staggered.
Where To Find The Black Steel Greatshield Location
Toget the Black Steel Greatshield inShadow of the Erdtree, you must head to one of two places: theChurch of Consolationin Gravesite Plain, or the FogRift Fort, which is technically in Gravesite Plain, but is accessed via a cliff in Scadu Altus.
Church of Consolation:
TheChurch of Consolationis one of the first locations that players are likely to find inShadow of the Erdtree.It is located just southeast of the Scorched Ruins, right on the edge of theMap: Gravesite Plain. When you enter the church for the first time, you will find a Black Knight standing sentry. Upon defeating the knight, you will automatically receive a Black Steel item. While we received theBlack Steel Greatshieldin both of our playthroughs, some players have said they received a different Black Steel item. If you do not get the Black Steel Greatshield here, there is another location where it is guaranteed to drop.
Fog Rift Fort:
To reach Fog Rift Fort, you’ll need to reach the Scadu Altus West site of grace, which is found directly west of the Highroad Cross site of grace, on the other side of the river bend. From the site of grace, head to the edge of the cliff and look down. You’ll see a series of rock ledges that you may fall onto, leading to the tower of the Fog Rift Fort. From the tower, follow the only path south until you reach a bridge heading east. Across the bridge, you see a doorway. Black Knight Garrew, a miniboss version of the Black Knights, will emerge from the door. Defeat him here to automatically get a Black Steel Greatshield.

Some players also claim it’s possible to get the shield as a drop from any Black Knight. However, after many attempts for this guide, it was not able to be confirmed. They do seem to drop their armor pieces and plenty of smithing stones, but never a shield. Should that change, this guide will be updated to reflect the possible chance for acquisition.
