Summary

After several successful outings with Spider-Man, Insomniac is set to tackle another outstanding comic book hero inMarvel’s Wolverine. Official information about the game is limited, although leaks and rumors are prevalent. Through those leaks, it’s clear that one aspect of the titular hero inMarvel’s Wolverineis going to be more like the films than the comics: his height.

Among general audiences, Wolverine will forever be represented by Hugh Jackman. Jackman’s interpretation may have differed from the source material at times, but his tenure as the character endured more than twenty years, and has provided plenty of beloved memories along the way. Wolverine’s stature is a major trait of the character that has never been portrayed accurately on film, and it seems that this trend of Logan’s size being increased isn’t going anywhere withMarvel’s Wolverine.

Wolverine’s Comic Appearance Has Long Been Misrepresented

According to Marvel’s own official material, Wolverine is about 5'3" in the comics. By contrast, Hugh Jackman is 6'2", nearly an entire foot taller than the hero he’s known for portraying. While a character’s height is normally a negligible aspect of their character, Wolverine’s stature is important enough to get comic book fans talking.

This inaccuracy in height was most relevant when Jackman was first cast, but has since become much less of a big deal. However, when Jackman seemingly retired the character inLogan, many were hoping that future renditions of the character would correct on this issue.X-Men ‘97delivered an accurate Wolverine design, which raised fan’s hopes even higher.

Deadpool & Wolverineeven features a variantthat pokes fun at fan outcry for a short Wolverine, with Hugh Jackman reprising his role here as well. With no recasting in sight, though,Marvel’s Wolverineis likely to be the next fresh interpretation of the character. Unfortunately, though there is currently only one official image of the titular hero, it’s not hard to tell the direction that Insomniac is going in.

Wolverine’s Fate May Already Be Sealed

Theteaser trailer forMarvel’s Wolverinewasn’t very revealing, with a total run time of less than a minute. There have been no other official details released since, which would typically leave some room for speculation. However, the initial reveal has already shown fans everything they need to see.

Logan is depicted out of costume, sitting at a bar in the aftermath of a brutal fight. A man stumbles to his feet and draws a knife, apparently the last man standing from the bar fight. Before the assailant can even take a few steps, Logan’s Adamantium claws emerge from his fist, revealing to the audience that this is Wolverine just before the title drops.

Insomniac seems to be purposefully shielding a lot of details about the game, especially afterMarvel’s Wolverineunfortunately leakedin December of last year. The announcement trailer never shows Logan’s face, let alone any kind of comic-accurate Wolverine costume. However, one doesn’t have to see a character’s face to figure out their height.

Insomniac’s Approach to Marvel’s Wolverine May Be for the Best

Marvel’s Wolverinehasn’t given a full look at Loganjust yet, but the trailer reveals enough of his torso and legs to make the intent very clear. While Wolverine is typically short and stout in the comics, he appears to be tall and lean in the upcoming Insomniac title. While there are technically plenty of ways to correct this, there are many more reasons that Insomniac is unlikely to take such an approach.

Based on leaked gameplay footage from Marvel’s Wolverine, it looks as if Logan will indeed be fairly tall.

Both ofInsomniac’s games in theMarvel’s Spider-Manseriesfeature costumes as a major appeal of the game.Marvel’s Wolverineis extremely likely to embrace this approach as well, and developers could include a more comic-accurate appearance in one of these costumes. However, shrinking down Logan’s character model would be much more difficult than simply swapping out his outfit. This is because it would completely change the dynamic of combat, which is guaranteed to be a major focus of the game.

While fans could hold out hope for an alternate costume, shrinking Logan would make every other character appear much taller, including enemies the players will have to dice up.Marvel’s Wolverineseems to be using a designfor the character that more closely resembles his depiction in film, rather than any given comic book appearance. It seems tall Wolverine is officially here to stay, at least for the time being.
