First announced in 2018,The Elder Scrolls 6is the long-awaited forthcoming entry in Bethesda Game Studio’s hugely popular FPS RPG fantasy series. Though it’s been six years since its official trailer dropped, the developer has provided hardly any updates or details since then regardingThe Elder Scrolls 6’s direction, plot, or release window. As the wait for more firm information continues, and Bethesda now prepares to focus on the first major DLC for its newest IP,Starfield’sShattered Space,TESfans have been left to speculate and wonder about when they might learn more about the sixth major installment.
One of the assumptions backed by persistent rumors is thatThe Elder Scrolls 6will be set in Hammerfell, as there were various prior hints and indications for this. Although not officially confirmed or denied, recent circumstantial evidence does seem to point toHammerfell looking more likely as the setting forTES 6. While this would line up with previous expectations, it also leaves one of the most tantalizing locations of Tamriel still yet unexplored in a mainline release. As such, Bethesda should finally send fans to the area of Elsweyr in a future major title.
The Elder Scrolls Onlinedid include a full season chapter set in Elsweyr, released in 2019. However,ESOtakes place much earlier in Tamriel’s timelineand the otherElder Scrollsgames, being more indirectly connected to them.
After The Elder Scrolls 6, Elsweyr Must Be the Next Region Featured
Elsweyr Is Primed to Be the Next Major Setting After The Elder Scrolls 6
The region of Elsweyr has been a part ofThe Elder Scrolls' world since the beginning, and many of the details provided paint a picture of one that contains a deep well of potential for both story and gameplay. This is largely thanks to thelore and history of the Khajiit, the cat-like race native to Elsweyr, and their varied communities and culture. Bordering other major provinces, and with a topography that stretches from dense jungles to vast plains dotted with rocky mesas, Elsweyr contains a number of great design possibilities, and it has long held potential as an incredible setting forTES.
Why The Elder Scrolls ‘Owes’ Fans a Title Set in Elsweyr After TES 6
The Elder Scrolls 6is still likely a ways off, and if the Hammerfell rumors are true, then it follows that it will probably be even longer before fans might see Elsweyr in a main title. However,it is possibleTES 6won’t be in Hammerfell, or at least not entirely, which could open the door to Elsweyr possibly appearing in it.TES 5:Skyrim’s second major DLC, Dragonborn, expanded to include the island of Solstheim, near the coast of Morrowind, the setting of the third game. This provides a good blueprint for how Bethesda could later send players to Elsweyr, if it isn’t part ofTES 6’s base experience.
With so much history behind it and linked to the Khajiit’s unique societies and religion, Elsweyr would make for a bounty of immersive plot and gameplay elements. Not only would it be a chance to delve much deeper into theintricacies of the Khajiitand the politics of the land, but it could lend itself to a wealth of diverse character creations and related innovative mechanics. After five major titles and 30 years, if it doesn’t appear in the sixth, then it will surely be time for the franchise to pay off the world building invested in Elsweyr by finally making it central afterward. Whether this is via significant DLC forThe Elder Scrolls 6,or perhaps even in its own spin-off down the line, fully featuring Elsweyr in the series' next major outing seems more than past due.
