Resident Evilis barreling ahead into its next era. After last year’s excellentResident Evil 4 Remake, there were some widespread rumors and fan theories about what would come next for Capcom’s survival horror staple. Assumptions were that the studio would continue its prior pattern of the next numbered remake and major entry. This seems to not be the case, though, as prominent leaks suggest remakes ofResident Evil 0andCODE: Veronicawill be the next projects. However, the ninthResident Evilentry was recently officially confirmed to be in early development as well.
While this means that fans will likely be waiting a bit longer to see how the newest entry will turn out, whether it be open-world, more akin toResident Evil 7andVillage, or a different direction altogether, one constant in the series has been the array of weapons that make upResident Evil’s pool of firearms. Given the precedent set by Capcom for previous titles, it’s a good bet that this particular aspect won’t change much, regardless of any other shakeups.
Why Resident Evil’s Next Entry Will Probably Recycle Old Weapons and Designs
Resident Evil’s Armory
Resident Evilhas generally featured a smaller and specific selection of weapons that have often been seen throughout many titles. Fans can thus expect to see some combination of the usual mainstays, including:
Resident Evil’s weapons can usually be upgradedand modified over the course into more powerful or efficient versions, and this is likely to remain the case in the next installment. There are also supplementary and secondary ones, such as knives and grenades, as well as some exceptions in certain titles, like the mine thrower or rocket launcher. Overall, though, the above are the tried and true collection and are almost guaranteed to return in the ninth main game.
Resident Evil’s Reuse of Assets
Though the modern remakes as well as the two most recent mainline entries were all generally well-received, there is one trait that they share, which is thatCapcom has reused a number of assets inResident Evilto varying degrees, noticeably ones such as miscellaneous furniture and equipment like the bolt cutters. Not that this is inherently a negative, as it can help save development costs and time while creating a sense of consistency between games without distracting too much. But the fact that this has been the case implies it will continue on, and fans will probably not see many weapons, if any, that deviate much from the general list and previous designs.
Resident Evil’s Weapons are Familiar and Reliable
Similar to theweapon assortment in Capcom’sMonster Hunterfranchise, which encourages gamers to familiarize themselves with a favored set matching their preferred playstyle,Resident Evilfans are likely accustomed to its smaller but still versatile choices.REhas never necessarily needed a huge amount of guns available, and the limited set plays into the franchise’s trademark survival aspects, forcing players to make efficient and smart use of the ammo they have on hand for their currently equipped arms, and change tactics when needed or against specific enemy types.
While the options in this area may not be overwhelming, especially compared to other games, each one can still be useful in many situations, and all are viable throughout. It is always possible that Capcom will drastically shift the weapons design inResident Evil 9, although given all the above, it currently seems more probable that the trend seen in at least the previous five games will continue for the foreseeable future.
