AWorld of Warcraftfan recently discovered SpongeBob, his home, and some of his friends hidden under the sea ofThe War Within. This small piece of Bikini Bottom can be found in the Isle of Dorn, the first zone of the newWorld of Warcraftexpansion.
The War Withinis officially live, bringing with it new story chapters, Hero Talents, and anincrease to theWorld of Warcraftlevel cap. However, one of the most exciting things in the expansion is Khaz Algar itself – the new continent ofThe War Within, divided into four zones: The Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, Hallowfall, and Azj-Kahet.
While exploring the first of these new areas,WoWfan and Redditor sam0wise discovered a charming reference toSpongeBob SquarePants. Far off the northwestern coast ofthe Isle of Dorn inWoW: The War Within, sam0wise found an underwater plant that looked strikingly similar to a pineapple. Beneath it, they noticed a sponge, pink starfish, snail shell, and crab with a hamburger – a charming reference to SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick, his pet Gary the snail, and Mr. Krabs, owner of the Krusty Krab restaurant.
SpongeBob Easter Egg in WoW: The War Within
This particular Easter egg is well-hidden – to find it, one must swim decently far off the coast of the Isle of Dorn. TheSpongeBobcrew is found far north of whereDalaran crashes in the intro scenario toWoW: The War Within, northwest of Storm’s Watch and Dornogal. Players may want to bring an aquatic mount and water-breathing potions, classes, or races if they go searching for it.
Sam0wise’s fellow fans got a kick out of this particular reference. Many were shocked at how detailed the Easter egg was, while others were sad there was no squid or squirrel to represent Squidward or Sandy. Either way, most applauded sam0wise for finding the reference, as it was clearly placed far off the beaten path.
There have been otherSpongeBobreferences inWorld of Warcraftbefore. DuringShadowlands, the Ardenweald faerie Seaharper had a dialogue box that spoke of a sponge and its starfish friend, the flavor text for the Crimson Bicorn hat and theCrusty Crawler mount from theWoWTrading Postboth reference the show’s iconic opening theme song, and a crab named Crusty can be found in a reef off the northern coast of Desolace. The newest reference toSpongeBob SquarePantsisn’t the first inWoW, and considering the show’s prominence in pop culture, it probably won’t be the last either.
