Summary

As Penn Badgley reminded viewers duringNetflix’sYouSeason 5 teaser trailer, his character, Joe Goldberg, has many loose ends from his past. His ex-obsessionMarienne, unbeknownst to Joe, is still aliveand, in her last scene of Season 4, incredulously reads an article absolving him of Love’s murder. There’s Nadia, Joe’s student turned detective, who he framed for her boyfriend’s murder and told her that he was, “looking forward to seeing what [she does] next.” Not to mention his son, Henry, who he initially left on Dante and Lansing’s doorstep in Season 3 and was barely given a mention in until the end of Season 4 and only in response what the public thinks about his decision. However, out of all these characters, there’s one thatfans are clamoring to see backin the final season.

Ellie Alves is aprecocious, smart-aleck teenager, a budding filmmaker, and the younger sister of Delilah, a reporter who also manages Joe’s apartment complex in Season 2. While Joe immediately feels an instant pull to protect Ellie, it was different from his big brother instinct towards Paco in Season 1. Because of Ellie’s more advanced age, they could bond over exchanging lists of favorite films and books, but she was young enough to be naive and trusted Henderson, a creepy comedian, who assaulted Delilah and tried to repeat his pattern with Ellie. Throughout the season, Joe’s protection of Ellie highlighted the way he wanted to see himself, as a hero, a “good guy”. However, that came to a crashing halt after Delilah was killed.

Ellie Never Quite Found Out What Happened to Her Sister

During their last interaction in Season 2, Joe tells Ellie that he got wrapped up with the Quinn family, that they were evil people who did evil things, and that Delilah was not coming back. He also told her not to go home to avoid CPS. He gave her money from a safe and told her to buy a ticket and Union Station and instructed her to “keep going east.” Joe also told Ellie that he would arrange a new ID for her so she could start over. He admitted to doing bad things and even confessed to her about committing Henderson’s murder. Naturally, Ellie was distraught and wanted answers about her sister. Joe was not completely innocent. He trapped Delilah in one of his famous glass cages, after all. However, it wasLove Quinn, not Joe, who murdered Ellie’s sister. However, he never revealed those details to Ellie. After being effectively exiled from Los Angeles and unable to return, Ellie has most likely spent the last two seasons somewhere in the Eastern United States, possibly been stewing on some complicated thoughts about Joe.

Has Joe Been Sending Her Money This Whole Time?

One of Joe’s promises to Ellie before they part is that he would continue to send her money. At the beginning of Season 3, he mentions that he was making good on his promise. However, whether hecontinued sending her money is up for debatethroughout the rest of the season as he grew more and more bored with suburban living. While its true that Joe is fickle, after all, he does fall in love easily, the audience never gets an answer one way or another. It seems unlikely that he would continue to send Ellie money while he was pretending to be dead and starting a new life in London in Season 4, especially given that he abandoned his own son to cover up his tracks. That said, if Joe had made good on his promise, that would give him an interesting weakness to explore. If he chose to stop sending Ellie money, it could increase the already intense feelings of abandonment Ellie was suffering from at the end of Season 2. Regardless, Joe could have made a very dangerous enemy out of Ellie.

Whatever Her Revenge, It Will Most Likely Not Be Violent

However, if Ellie does prove to be an enemy to Joe in Season 5, it’s unlikely that she would go so far as to murder him. In aninterview with Business Insiderprior to Season 3, Ortega shut down the theory that Ellie would kill any character. She stated, “Right now we see her as somebody who’s incredibly hurt and has been screwed over and kind of got the worst of the worst — to bring her back and make her a murderer like Joe defeats the purpose because that’s not her character and that’s not in her heart.” Most likely, Ellie would use her intelligence to bring Joe down. Kate and Joe might have all the money in the world, but Joe has never been a character to cover his tracks and he will inevitably slip up in Season 5. Additionally, there are fans that would love to see Ellie team up with other characters as well, possibly Marienne and Nadia, and form a team. (This seems to be a theme with Ortega’s characters, as fans would also like to seeWednesday Addams with a squadof her own.)

AsYougoes into its final season, one thing is for certain, Joe Goldberg is back in New York and will continue his (sometimes memeable) penchant for inner monologues, locking hostages in cages, and agood old-fashioned murder spree. Who or what is going to finally end his unending lethal compulsions is up in the air. While it has not been officially confirmed that Jenna Ortega will reprise her role as Ellie in Season 5, fans are holding out hope that she will return in a big way and perhaps even have a hand or two in stopping Joe for good. Scheduling conflicts with Ortega’s other Netflix show,Wednesday, prevented Ortega from returninglast season, but the actress has eagerly expressed an interest in reprising her role. Fans will just have to wait until Season 5 premieres to see if there are any surprises, but knowingYou, it’s going to be a hell of a ride.
