Summary
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manis set to release later this year, and the show’s creator has confirmed one totally awesome addition to the cast of the show that could be a great move for the MCU going forward.
Spider-Manhas been a fan favorite since his early days in the comics and has a lot of appeal across demographics. As such, the character has a long history of iconic animated shows with all sorts of different approaches to telling the hero’s story, from mature and smart to cheeky and fun. In 2021, another new series would be announced and titledSpider-Man: Freshman Yearbefore being renamedYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,which would focus on an alternate version of Peter Parker separate from Tom Holland’s popularHomefranchise. The new show has a distinct style evocative of early Spider-Man comics and promises to be apiece of Spider-Man media that finally centers Spider-Managain, removed from the overarching influences that the MCU foisted on the character and setting him upright in his own universe.
It’s been all but confirmed thatfans won’t be getting the next Spider-Verse installment anytime soon, and soYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manis currently enjoying a lot of extra attention and has no intention of squandering it. In a recent appearance onThe Official Marvel Podcast,Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Mancreator Jeff Trammell discussed the show at length and was asked about what new characters fans could expect to see in the show, to which he gave several interesting responses. “Um, well, Aunt May, “ Trammell answered jokingly before getting into some new names. “Yeah, but like there’s so many characters that aren’t like prototypical Spider-Man characters that we got to introduce through this series. The big one is Nico Minoru of the Runaways. I’m a huge fan of that series and a huge fan of Nico and I’m very excited that she is in our show. There’s Pearl Pangan, Lonnie Lincoln…” Trammell would also tease a bunch of prominent Spider-Man regulars before adding two more exciting names to the list.
There’s a few characters that we are familiar with from other series, as well as Spider-Man classic characters that we’re excited to mix it up with. And I’ll also say Amadeus Cho and Jean Foucault will appear in the series, so there’s a lot of cross-pollination from the comic books within this world that I’m really excited to dig into.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manis set to change at least one key aspect of the characterdue to being an alternate story removed from the grand MCU narrative, but it might also be doing a lot more for the franchise than some might think. The addition of Amadeus Cho is especially interesting, as the character has a lot of connections to interesting parts of the Marvel universe and could be a key part of looping in a fan-favorite character back into the swing of things. In addition to being a certifiable genius, Cho is also capable of a Hulk-like transformation in a similar fashion to his role model, Bruce Banner. Letting fans get a good look at one of the more interesting and stable Hulk offshoots could bring a lot of interest back following the (to say the least) mixed reception of She-Hulk and the lack of steam left in Bruce Banner’s tank as the Avengers lineup reconfigures.
In many ways, the 90sSpider-Mananimated series was the original connected universefor Marvel, andYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Mancould live up to that series in this regard. Introducing Cho and other awesome Marvel characters to the mainstream could go a long way to help cement the show’s place in the cultural zeitgeist and could even have the same widening effect on the mainline MCU in due time. For now, though, fans can look forward to enjoying Cho and the other characters in the show itself.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manis currently set to premiere for streaming on Disney+ before the end of 2024.
